Seeding Innovation:

Over $250K in Catalyst Grants Power UWM Research

The Catalyst Grant program continues to spark innovation by supporting research with strong commercial promise and real-world impact. Thanks to generous support from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation and Invenergy, more than $250,000 was awarded this year to six UWM research teams. Their projects tackle challenges ranging from cancer diagnostics and clean energy to rehabilitation robotics and tools that support equitable decision-making in regulated professions. Each team is using Catalyst funding to advance early-stage solutions that address urgent societal needs and position their innovations for real-world deployment and impact.


Healthcare & Medicine


Precision Cancer Diagnostics

Drs. Ashwin Narasimhan and Priyatha Premnath

Developing a liquid biopsy platform to isolate rare circulating tumor cells with greater accuracy, improving early cancer detection and personalized treatment planning.


Targeted Cancer Therapy

Drs. Xiaohua Peng and Taufeeque Ali

Advancing a combination therapy that uses vitamin C to activate a novel compound that selectively kills cancer cells, offering a less toxic alternative to conventional chemotherapy.


Rehabilitation Robotics for Bedridden Patients

Dr. Habib Rahman

Creating a portable, bed-attachable robotic exoskeleton to deliver early-stage lower-limb therapy, reducing caregiver burden and improving recovery outcomes.

Environmental Monitoring and Agrochemical Development

Drs. Rebecca Klaper and Eric Ostovich

Engineering genetically modified algae to detect chemical impacts at the cellular level, supporting safer agrochemical design and faster water quality assessments.


Next-Generation Power Conversion for Energy Storage

Dr. Feng Guo

Prototyping a novel power converter to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of battery energy storage systems, enabling better integration of renewable energy.

The Catalyst Grant Program is a proven engine for innovation at UW-Milwaukee—bridging the gap between academic research and real-world solutions. With over $6 million awarded to 114 high-potential projects, Catalyst funding has helped launch startups, secure patents, and attract more than $46 million in follow-on investment.


But with federal research funding facing uncertainty, industry support is more critical than ever. Award sponsorship helps UWM researchers validate market needs, engage with industry, and bring breakthrough ideas to life. For every dollar awarded, the program returns $7.70 in follow-on funding—amplifying impact on Wisconsin’s innovation economy.


This year’s awardees are tackling urgent challenges in cancer diagnostics, clean energy, robotics, and more. We can't wait to see what next year's projects have in store for us. Ionel Popa - Exploring Soft Materials for Medicine, Industry, and Beyond


At the crossroads of physics, biology, and chemistry, Dr. Ionel Popa’s UWM lab explores the mechanics of soft biomaterials—proteins, tissues, and polymers so delicate they behave almost like liquids. By building custom tools and experimental approaches, his team is uncovering how these materials function and applying that knowledge to advance drug screening, diagnostics, and bio-inspired products.


In this interview, Dr. Popa highlights his expertise spanning biomaterials and instrumentation design. His lab is eager to collaborate with partners in biotech, pharma, food science, and advanced materials—transforming fundamental science into practical solutions. Read full interview.
