In Memorium
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of Mr. George Gartner, Founding Club Member and perennial sponsor.

As the current Texas State Record Blue Marlin was caught on Mr. Gartner's boat while he was a Club member and sponsor, the Board of Directors unanimously approved a motion to honor his memory with the George Gartner Memorial Trophy for the Largest Blue Marlin caught in the Yearlong Awards Program. The first presentation of this newly-named trophy will be at the 2020 Awards and Fundraising Banquet on April 18.

The Club extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends for the loss of Mr. George Gartner as he will be missed by all who knew him. Contributions may be made in his honor to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at PanCan.org in lieu of flowers.

In loving memory

Written by Captain Kevin Deerman

With great sadness and fond memories, I say goodbye to my longtime friend and fishing partner, George Gartner.

We shared many incredible times together along with his wonderful family, friends, and the Legacy fishing team doing what we both loved. He will be greatly missed by myself and the many people his life has touched in our sportfishing community.

The Learning Curve

Conservation & Education Committee
October 2019

NMFS recently released a proposal to relax longline restrictions in gear restricted areas. As of now, longliners fishing in the Gulf of Mexico have to use "weak hooks" which theoretically break when hooking mainly bluefin tuna and blue marlin. The first proposal would cut the amount of time weak hooks have to be in use to only January-June, because that's when the bluefin are here. The other change would convert the Gulf of Mexico area (in the Eastern Gulf) which is closed during April in May to a "monitoring" area, and allow longlining. Here are the closed and gear restricted areas:

In the proposal, as is typical of NMFS, they are showing negligence in protecting blue marlin populations, as they are only concerned about the weak hooks when bluefin tuna are here, neglecting to consider that our highest concentration of blue marlin off of Texas is in July and August.

HBGFC, through our partnership with The Billfish Foundation, supported TBF's response letter strongly speaking against either of the proposals. You can see the proposals and TBF's letter (with HBGFC listed as supporter) here: https://billfish.org/featured/deadline-is-today-to-tell-nmfs-no-to-harming-our-billfish-and-ability-to-fish/.
