Hi Lisa,

Anabaptists view Jesus both as the lens through which we read scripture and the example of how we are to live. This is why, for example, Anabaptists are pacifists. Even though a strong biblical case can be made for going to war (especially from the Old Testament), Jesus invited us to love our enemies and not to take revenge. Jesus’ words on this matter take precedence for us.

MDS volunteers continue to amaze me with their persistence in seeking to follow Jesus’ way. We really do try to be apprentices (disciples) of Jesus.

This weekend at a church in which I was sharing about MDS, a returning project leader told the story of stopping in at the house of a family whose place they were rebuilding. Because it was evening, the father of the family was there. The project leader told us of how in gratitude, the father put his head on the shoulder of the project leader and wept with gratitude. And who knows, perhaps in those tears was a release of the difficulty of their journey of recovery.

As we prepare to journey this holy week, we acknowledge a time of suffering, of tears, of death. But we also know the source of our hope: the hope for resurrection life. May your worship this week, draw you closer to the One who made a way and showed us the way.

Chainsaws were "music to our ears"

Volunteers clear brush and trees along a highway after spring ice storm in Ontario

Sometimes, experiences with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) come full circle. This was the case for Deb and John,* who were introduced to MDS in 2008 when John was invited to volunteer on an MDS assignment in New Orleans, Louisiana. He “caught the bug,” laughed Deb, and participated in three more assignments in years following.

Fast forward to 2025. Ice and wind storms hit central and eastern Ontario on March 30 and 31, including the community where Deb and John live. They found themselves among over one million Ontarians affected — their yard filled with fallen branches and downed trees, and their power out for nine days.

Western North Carolina neighbors

welcome the GreenGiant

Residents of the Stoney Creek community in western North Carolina drove the last screw and cut the ribbon on their new bridge on April 4, seven months after Hurricane Helene destroyed it.

The bridge is the second to be dedicated in North Carolina by a partnership called “Bridging Together,” co-organized by Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) and Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR).
