Hi friend,
I was driving through downtown Winnipeg the other day when I found myself in an unusual weather situation. It was sunny directly above me, but I could see tall dark storm clouds off in the distance. Suddenly, it was raining as the sun continued to glisten through my windshield. I saw a rainbow ahead of me while at the same time, an emergency alert was buzzing on my phone, warning me to take cover because of a possible tornado in the area.
It felt mysterious and it once again reminded me of the simple truth that we are not in control. When it comes to climate, we are at the mercy of forces and powers much greater than ourselves that have both life-giving and devastating effects. Yet the scriptures remind us that there is one who stands above it all.
The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters. (Psalm 24:1-2, NIV)
The Psalmist reminds us that God is the “King of glory” and the “Lord strong and mighty” (Psalm 24:8). The fact that we are powerless should not lead us to despair but rather to trust. We are called to have faith that God is with us, that God will guide us, and that God will equip us to do the work He calls us to do.
As I encounter MDS volunteers, I am encouraged by their trust in God to empower them to serve. They model true dependency, not built on weakness, but on the acknowledgement that our hope lies in the one who is “strong and mighty.” This kind of dependency on God is at the root of our faith and our call to reach out in love to those around us.
Blessings,
