Hi friend,

As I reflect on my time with MDS Canada, I recall an email I received some 10 years ago from my predecessor, Janet Plenart. Here is a paragraph from that email:

“May I be among the first to congratulate you on your new appointment to MDS Region V staff! You are joining a wonderful and compassionate organization! MDS is like no other organization I have ever encountered. While there are other volunteer organizations, nowhere will you find the depth and breadth of dedicated, compassionate, caring, skilled, and willing volunteers you will find here. It is quite remarkable. You will have the privilege and responsibility of finding the balance between providing visionary and strong leadership on the one hand, and getting out of their way and being the best cheerleader on the other hand! The staff is small, but highly committed and hard working. Nothing pretentious about this bunch!”

A decade later, I can tell you that every word she wrote about all of you rings true. Thank you for being who God has called you to be.

“When bad things happen, good people show up”

“When bad things happen, good people show up and get you back on your feet.”

That’s what Sylvia Starr, 70, said on behalf of herself, her husband Jeff, 67, and their two adult sons on January 13 at the dedication of their new house in Libau, Man.

RV Program founders recall the early days

From an idea to a thriving program. Don and Marilyn Buller, from their home in Fresno, took time to recall how they founded the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) RV Program.

The MDS RV Program comprises a 55+ crowd of close-knit volunteers who get a lot done—and have fun at the same time! Volunteers bring their own RVs to projects, and from there they help rebuild and repair homes for disaster survivors. RV volunteers work together, pray together and play together, often staying in close contact for years after they serve together.
