March 18, 2026

Greetings!

I plan to retire as MDS executive director on December 31, 2026. I began serving in this position in February 2004, and it has truly been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

Over these 22 years, I have had the privilege of witnessing God’s goodness again and again—through the steady hands of volunteers, the resilience of families rebuilding after disaster, and the extraordinary generosity of donors. Your faithful support through prayers, volunteering, and donations has helped build far more than houses. Together we have helped rebuild lives, restore communities, and lay foundations of hope when people needed them most. As Psalm 127:1 reminds us, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” Over these years I have seen again and again that the work of MDS is truly God’s work carried out through faithful volunteers.

I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me and in this ministry. Your partnership has supported MDS volunteers responding to hurricanes, floods, wildfires, human-caused disasters, and countless local crises. Time and again, we have seen compassion take shape in lumber and drywall—but even more in the relationships formed and the renewed futures made possible through this shared work of building.

I remain fully committed to leading with energy, clarity, and faithfulness through December 2026. My hope in announcing this now is to give our Board and staff ample time to thoughtfully and prayerfully prepare for the next chapter. The foundation of MDS is strong, built on faith, service, and the dedication of thousands of volunteers. I am confident that God will continue to guide this ministry as it builds forward with wisdom and renewed vision.

As I look ahead to retirement, I am grateful for the opportunity to spend more time with my wife, our family, and our grandchildren, and to find ways to continue serving through volunteer work in my local community of Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Thank you for helping build this ministry over the years and for walking alongside me in this journey. It has been an honor to serve with you. I look forward to continuing our work together in the months ahead as we finish strong.

With gratitude and hope,

Kevin King

Executive Director, MDS U.S.

MDS Family Program

now scheduling

What’s a “typical day” for the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) Family Program?

“Wonderful meals, age‑appropriate work (both in tasks and in the length of work periods for the children), crafts and snacks for the kids, and evenings spent inter-generationally playing games and talking,” answered Rosemary Blessing, who participated in the program with her family in the summer of 2025.
