Project Update: March 2025

Construction brings new facility closer to completion

The Golden Plough Lodge (GPL) and Northumberland County Archives and Museum (NCAM) project has entered its final stage of construction, now 89% complete, marking significant progress toward opening this new facility. On-site workers continue to focus on interior finishes, including drywall application, painting, cabinetry installation, and connecting essential systems to support a high-quality long-term care environment.

Throughout the building, flooring installation is underway, and cabinets, cupboards, and vanities are being fitted to create functional and comfortable spaces. Each home area, designed to accommodate up to 32 residents, is structured to provide a personal and home-like atmosphere while ensuring staff have convenient access to deliver care.

Preparation for the final commissioning of mechanical systems is in progress, with advanced heating and air conditioning systems set to be activated to maintain a comfortable environment for residents and staff.

As work continues from the upper floors downward, the focus remains on delivering a warm, welcoming, and functional home - one that meets the needs of both residents and staff, fostering exceptional care in a truly home-like setting.

Preparing for the Future: Transition Planning

As the final stages of preparation for the move to the new facility approach, the focus is shifting to those who will call this place home—residents, their families, and dedicated staff.

The occupancy plan has been submitted to the Ministry of Long-Term Care for review. The Ministry will assess policies, equipment, and processes to ensure compliance with rigorous standards. An official inspection will take place one month before move-in, evaluating cleanliness, safety, and overall readiness. In the coming months, on-site training will begin, allowing staff to familiarize themselves with the facility, adjust to new layouts, and refine daily operations in the new environment.

At the heart of this project is a commitment to creating a comfortable, welcoming space for residents while ensuring staff have the resources needed to provide the highest level of care.

NCAM's Upcoming Transition

The Northumberland County Archives and Museum (NCAM) is preparing for an exciting transition. This fall, NCAM will be moving into a brand-new space alongside the Golden Plough Lodge, creating a unique collaboration between heritage and community well-being.

To prepare for the move, the NCAM team is focused on organizing and carefully packing over 530 metres—equivalent to almost nine hockey rinks—of archival materials and hundreds of artefacts so they can safely make the journey to their new home. The new facility will feature expanded space for researchers, a modern conservation lab, specialized collections storage, and a gallery for exhibitions and community programs.

NCAM is in the final stages of design for the first community exhibition to be launched in the new gallery, which will celebrate Anishinaabemowin in the Michi Saagiig dialect—the first predominant language spoken on this land. They’re excited to welcome you to your new archives and museum later this year!

With every milestone we reach, we’re getting closer to opening a facility that will serve our community for generations to come.
