Project Update: October 2023

Window Installation Underway

Over the summer months construction of the GPL & NCAM continued to proceed, with the project now at the 60% completion stage. A big focus has been on completing the roof structure which is now undergoing final sealing. Heating and cooling systems, including large boilers, have been hoisted and placed on the roof in preparation for hook up and installation.

Outside, the window installation is nearing completion which will allow for a lot of natural light for both residents and staff. Crews are also preparing to begin attaching the exterior cladding. Inside we have completed the fire suppression testing and commissioning and ductwork, electrical rough-ins and interior wall framing is in progress.

Embracing Fresh Air and Natural Light

One of the questions staff and residents have asked is will the new resident rooms offer a breath of fresh air.

Each of the 180 new resident rooms is being designed with resident comfort and well-being in mind with windows facing outside or onto the interior natural courtyards. Not only will these rooms be equipped with efficient heating and cooling systems for optimal comfort, but they'll also boast an abundance of windows. And yes, these windows will indeed open to let in a touch of fresh air.

But there's more to these windows than just ventilation. Natural light plays a pivotal role in enhancing both mental and physical well-being. It can boost mood, improve sleep patterns, and even increase energy levels. So, rest assured that our new resident rooms will not only be cozy but also bright and airy, contributing to a happier and healthier living environment for our cherished residents.

NCAM Gears Up for a Grand Relocation: A Peek into the Preparations

Northumberland County Archives and Museum (NCAM) is ramping up as they prepare for their move to a new space. The transition promises to be a big undertaking, requiring meticulous planning and care.

Adding to the team's capabilities is Lindsay Fler, a student intern from Fleming College's Cultural Heritage Conservation Management program. Lindsay's role as an emerging conservation professional will be to evaluate the overall condition of NCAM's collection, recommend risk mitigation strategies for a safe move, and carry out conservation treatments for paper-based materials to ensure they remain stable for future exhibitions and research access.

Among NCAM's prized possessions is the land registry collection, containing over 100 bound ledgers and thousands of land instruments dating back to the 1700's. This collection is invaluable for property and genealogical research.

To safeguard these treasures, new high-density shelving units with custom-designed drawers will be installed. Lindsay will work to assess, treat, and rehouse delicate instruments and land registry abstracts, ensuring they are ready for their journey to the new home.

The NCAM team's dedication and Lindsay's expertise will ensure that the museum's artifacts will be ready for a seamless transition to their new expanded space.
