Project Update: August 2023

Pathways to Progress:

Update from Glenn Dees

Construction for the GPL & NCAM project continues and over the past few months, our construction partners have made headway. On the exterior, the construction team has completed 85 per cent of the roof sealing, continued to apply exterior cladding, and are installing the final set of windows. The generators, heat exchangers and boilers have been installed on the roof.

In parallel, progress is underway inside the building. Mechanical service installation and wall framing is 95 per cent complete on level two and three. While these achievements are good news, overall project progress has been slower than anticipated.

As with any large-scale endeavor, unforeseen issues may arise. We are continuing to work at mitigating any emergent challenges and manage risks, to keep the project on track and achieve our goal to complete this multi million-dollar project safely, and with quality.

Groundbreaking Collaboration at GPL and NCAM Facility to Enrich Resident and Community Lives

The groundbreaking partnership between NCAM and the GPL will not only result in a shared building but a shared vision as well, where cultural activities will enhance the well-being of residents, visitors, and staff alike. This partnership marks a pioneering approach to promoting well-being and cultural enrichment.

With the shared vision of creating a community hub, the two organizations will weave cultural activities into the fabric of daily life at the facility. The integration of NCAM's cultural activities into GPL life enrichment activities will create a unique and engaging experience for everyone involved. The heart of this endeavour lies in intergenerational programing. Katie Kennedy, NCAM Curator, and Leyla Attis, GPL Resident and Family Services Manager, are already discussing plans for intergenerational programming, bridging the gap between generations, and fostering mutual understanding and respect.

Intergenerational programming has immense value by encouraging residents to share their wisdom and life stories with younger generations. Such initiatives honours the dignity, knowledge, and heritage of residents and offers a tangible source of purpose and fulfillment.

“Our vulnerable population often feels stripped of their roles and contributions as they age,” commented Katie Kennedy. “We envision creating an inclusive space where generations can connect, learn from one another, and thrive together, enriching lives and fostering mutual understanding."

"At the GPL, we believe in fostering an environment where residents have opportunities to still give to their community, to create meaningful connections and share their lifelong wisdom with others,” remarked Leyla Attis. “The intergenerational program with NCAM is an unprecedented opportunity for the residents to be able to care for us while we care for them. This collaboration will bring many benefits to the residents, and we are excited to see the positive impact of these connections develop.”

Beyond the benefits for residents, this partnership also aims to foster a deeper sense of community and understanding for everyone. It is an opportunity for residents to feel valued and engaged, while younger generations gain invaluable insights from the lived experiences of their older community members. The infusion of cultural activities promises to elevate the quality of life within the facility and create a truly inclusive and engaged community.

In a world where aging populations are increasing, this collaboration sets a unique precedent for the future of long-term care, demonstrating how culture, history, and human connection can come together to create a space where all can thrive.
