On the Passing of

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA joins with countless others in the United States and around the world in expressing our shock and deep sorrow upon hearing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s death, caused by a senseless act of violence. Abe was one of Japan’s great leaders, and he leaves behind a most significant foreign policy legacy that expanded Japan’s diplomatic influence around the world and strengthened the U.S.-Japan alliance.

The steps that Japan took during his tenure to bolster the country’s legal and operational capacity to defend itself and collaborate with allies would not have been possible without Abe. His vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region is enduring and still growing. Abe’s commitment to a rules-based, liberal international order and his tireless diplomatic activity on behalf of Japan were aimed at promoting peace, stability, and prosperity for all.

These are goals that animate our work at Sasakawa USA, to strengthen the U.S.-Japan relationship for the benefit of a free and open international community. We stand in solidarity with those who oppose violence and support democracy and free expression. We express our condolences to all in Japan, the United States, and around the world who mourn Abe’s loss. We will honor his legacy through our continued work at Sasakawa USA.
