Bishop State awarded Leadership Award by National Coalition of Certification Centers

Bishop State has been awarded the prestigious Leadership Award by the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) for its outstanding commitment to career and technical education!


Each year, NC3 recognizes the top-performing individuals and institutions for their leadership and innovation in CTE. President Olivier Charles, along with other Bishop State staff, received the award on behalf of the college.

Bishop State is proud to be listed as one of the Top 5 Most Beautiful HBCU Campuses in Alabama by AL.com. It is the only community college to make the list.


Alabama has more Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs, than any other state in America. As the home of 14 HBCUs, six of which are community colleges, each campus offers a unique blend of historical charm and natural beauty.

Congratulations to former Bishop State Community College baseball player Gage Miller, the 92nd overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, selected by the Miami Marlins as their new second baseman!

Student Leaders on the Move!

Phi Theta Kappa attends regional conference

Officers, members, and advisors of Bishop State's Alpha Epsilon Nu chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa student honor society recently attended a regional conference at Montevallo University. Chapter officers Erica Rodrigues and Anastaisa Johnson presented to the region and the chapter's campus project, the Lactation room, was featured during a panel. Congrats, PTK!

Student Leadership Institute

Student leaders -- along with Bishop State staff members Symentha McDonald and Dr. Carl Cunningham, Jr. -- attended the Student Leadership Institute at Southern Union State Community College (Opelika Campus) on July 18.



The event, themed "Building Tomorrow's Leaders Today," was hosted by the Alabama Deans of Student Affairs Association.

Bishop State Ambassador Training 2024

While faculty and staff are preparing for a new semester, our student leaders are also preparing for another year of student leadership.


The Bishop State Student Ambassador Retreat was held on Wednesday, July 31. Student leaders learned about the college, how to be a leader among their peers, and how to be a representative of the college to the community.


The retreat was followed by team bonding with a few rounds of golf at Top Golf.

Former Miss Bishop State making waves

in arts & entertainment

Bishop State Community College graduate KD Henderson led her Propel team to a second-place finish at the Arts & Entertainment Industry Meet Up demonstrating her promising career potential in the arts and entertainment industry.


Henderson, a 2024 graduate of Bishop State, was a member of the immersive week-long Propel Arts & Entertainment Program which focused on cultivating the next generation of diverse talent.

Two Bishop State faculty/staff members complete year-long training

Dr. Rhonda Lucas and Dr. Steven Onukwuli recently completed a year-long professional development training designed to enhance teaching skills to ensure the most impactful learning classroom experience.


Launched by PROPEL Center, an innovation technology hub for HBCUs, the HBCU Faculty Fellows Academy (HFFA) serves as a cornerstone programmatic initiative that provides selected faculty members an opportunity to facilitate learning, lead, and leverage Apple technology to promote student success, and expand their professional network.

Health Sciences at Bishop State
