November 2023

Hello Wildcats!

Bishop State has been on the move! In October we saw two grand openings, at least two major community sponsorships, a Scholars' Bowl competition, Trunk-or-Treat, and a host of events, activities, and guests on campus nearly every day! We have been busy! There are a couple of built-in breaks this month. The college will be closed on Friday, November 10 in observance of Veterans Day as well as on Thursday, November 23 - Friday, November 24 (students are out November 20-26) for the Thanksgiving holiday. Check out some of the highlights from October and what we have to look forward to in November!

PTK: Mental Health Awareness

  • 55% of U.S. counties do not have a single practicing psychiatrist.
  • The average delay between the onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years.

Bishop State's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society students are working to raise awareness about mental health with their "Systems of Support: Mental Health Week"

Art Club and Early Childhood Education

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at MLF

Students from Bishop State's Early Childhood Education program and Art Club joined forces to use their skills to entertain children at the Mobile Latin Fest!

Early Childhood students interacted with children by playing games, designing with crafts, and creating with play dough. They were able to put the skills they learn in the classroom to practice with the children at the festival. They were successful as the kids looked like they had a lot of fun! Check out photos from the event in the link below.

Members of the Art Club designed Latin-themed coloring sheets for the children to color. The coloring sheets were a hit as kids crowded the table for a chance to create their own masterpieces. Some of the artists stopped by and took pictures with the kids, motivating them to stay in school and always go after their dreams. Great job, Early Childhood & Art Club students!

OUR COMMUNITY

Trunk-or-Treat 2023

Our goal was to make Trunk-or-Treat bigger and better this year, and we succeeded! Almost 1,000 kids and families came through the Bishop State Trunk-or-Treat dressed up in creative costumes and trick-or-treating throughout the campus. We had lots of candy, engaging games, and the support of our faculty, staff, students, and several sponsors. Congratulations to the Health Sciences department for winning first place for their Barbie-themed attraction!

Breast Cancer Awareness

Our students, faculty, and staff came together wearing their pink (and pink ribbons) to create a powerful symbol of support and solidarity for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

They formed a pink ribbon, a beautiful testament to our commitment to the fight against breast cancer. By raising awareness and promoting early detection, we can make a difference.

We stand with survivors, support fighters, and remember those we've lost while encouraging everyone to prioritize their health. It's not just a color but a movement fostering hope, strength, and change.

Thank you, Bishop State SGA, for organizing this opportunity!

Celebrating HBCUs

Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed October as HBCU Month in Alabama. Macedonia Baptist Church in Daphne, Alabama celebrated HBCU Awareness Sunday on October 15th. Adjunct HVAC Instructor, Billy Mayhand, represented Bishop State and he said, "Of course, Bishop State was the best!"

The Women Missionary Society and Youth People Division of Bethel A.M.E. Church celebrated Bishop State on October 14th as a part of the Southwest Alabama Annual Conference. About 30 students learned about Bishop State and the opportunities the college provides. Thank you, Ms. Mamie Giles, for ensuring Bishop State was represented!
