Twenty six local nonprofits received up to $2,000 in grants for ideas that emerged following their participation in On the Table Greater Akron last fall.  From Kenmore to Cuyahoga Falls and Fairlawn to Wadsworth, the grants will support programs that bring diverse cultures together over multilingual meals, educate employers about re-entry hiring practices, showcase minority artists at community-wide art displays and much more. More than $3.2 million was distributed in grants by Akron Community Foundation this quarter, including more than half a million dollars in board discretionary funding for education and early learning programs. Alchemy Inc. received a $10,000 grant to support its group mentoring program for urban adolescents in Akron Public Schools. The nationally acclaimed program uses storytelling and mythology to help students set goals, build critical thinking skills, and reach their full potential.

'No Small Matter' Film Screening
Join Kevin Thompson, regional president of PNC Bank, and Joe Kanfer, venturer and chairman of GOJO Industries, on April 17 for a special screening of "No Small Matter," a documentary on early childhood education.
New fund supports recreational youth baseball and softball leagues in Akron newfunds
The West Akron Baseball League Endowment Fund is one of 15 new funds recently established at Akron Community Foundation. The endowment fund supports West Akron Baseball League's mission of teaching the skills needed for players to be competitive in baseball, softball and T-ball.

The Summit Senior Coalition, a group of nonprofits and agencies funded by Akron Community Foundation, recently launched  gettingwiser.org, a comprehensive online resource for Summit County's growing senior population. The site helps residents navigate questions related to  health and financial management, home assistance, transportation, future planning and volunteer services.
