AI Action Plan Will Help Make America the

Technology Gold Standard

The Trump administration’s AI Action Plan, released Wednesday, aims to solidify U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) by addressing regulatory hurdles, fostering innovation, and unlocking its transformative potential.

‌

Why It Matters: AI is projected to contribute $13 trillion to global economic growth by 2030.

‌

  • The AI Action Plan provides a roadmap for the U.S. to win the AI race.

  • It addresses regulatory challenges and promotes responsible innovation.

  • The strategy includes promoting open-source AI, particularly for small business.

Details: The plan focuses on:

‌

  • Addressing state and federal AI laws that hobble AI development.

  • Streamlining permitting for critical AI infrastructure.

  • Ensuring reliable and affordable energy for businesses and consumers.

  • Advancing U.S. leadership in AI diplomacy.

Be smart: Nearly 40% of small businesses use generative AI tools—applications like chat and image creation—and nearly all small businesses use digital tools that are in some way powered by AI.

‌

Our take: â€śThis forward-looking plan takes steps to accelerate innovation by fixing a regulatory landscape hobbled by conflicting state-level laws and activist-driven overreach,” said U.S. Chamber Executive Vice President Neil Bradley. â€śThese proposed actions will position the United States to tackle our most pressing challenges and lead the global AI race.”

‌

What’s next: The U.S. Chamber submitted comments to the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Science Foundation in March. Policymakers and businesses must now collaborate to implement the plan effectively to foster a competitive, open, and innovation-driven AI ecosystem.

What Will the Federal Reserve Do?

The Federal Reserve is facing growing discontent over not easing interest rates. On The Call, the weekly video series from the U.S. Chamber’s Global Intelligence Desk, James Bullard, former CEO and President of the St. Louis Federal Reserve and dean of the Mitch Daniels School of Business at Purdue University, discussed the Fed’s independence and where interest rates are headed.

‌

His key takeaways:

  • Political pressure on the Federal Reserve is not new. But members of the Open Market Committee, which makes decisions affecting interest rates, are “very data intensive” and “take their role very seriously.”

  • On the direction of interest rates, “the committee will use the July meeting to set up the September rate cut,” with another possible rate cut in December.
