It's true. Just a few years ago, I quit horses for good. Each year I reflect on that life-changing day, September 24, 2008.
That was the day I lost my beloved horse, Egeris, due to a tragic injury. He had been in my life for 8 years. With a broken heart and two little boys at home, I told myself I was done with horses. Forever. My plan was to focus solely on being a mom, a rewarding and full-time job in itself. Looking back on that time, it didn't feel as if anything in my life was missing. I was happy. Even without horses in my life.
What happened?!
Well, just a few years later I am now the founder of Denver Equestrians Riding School, and the owner of a Colorado Equestrian Center! How did I go from one extreme to the other? The story is encouraging to me, and I share it in hopes that you are also inspired to follow your heart and your dreams.
For a brief overview of events leading up to this point (and the creation of Denver Equestrians Riding School) visit my profile page
on our website. (That's me and Shalimar at Camp in 1976!)
It's already been 7 years since Egeris passed away. Devastated, I vowed that
I was done loving horses. This chapter of my life was closed. Period. I would not allow myself to feel this pain and loss again, so I shut the lid on my tack trunk. In the weeks following, I sold my show clothes along with most of his tack and equipment.
To avoid telling and re-telling the story of his injury and death, I posted the details online. Shortly thereafter, a sport horse breeder by the name of Donna Ray contacted me via
facebook. She read my post and said was praying for me.
She told me she felt lead by God to offer me one of her yearlings.
How could I refuse such a generous gift? To this day, I still have not met the faithful person who opened the door to my heart to love a horse again. In 2009, she sent me this beautiful colt, appropriately named "
Providence." (Shown in the trailer the day of his arrival.) Pro was born the same year Egeris died, and was given his name at birth. According to the Webster Dictionary, Providence means
"God conceived as the power sustaining and guiding human destiny." He definitely has had a part in my destiny.
"How are we going to afford another horse?" It was 2009, the economy was terrible, and I remember telling my husband that I would "teach a few lessons" to support Provo (shown, right). I started teaching again, and that was just the beginning of
Denver Equestrians Riding School. In all honesty, I had no idea what was to come. Thanks to the support of many horse lovers (like YOU), our new and
unique riding programs grew quickly. I hired an assistant, and then an office manager, and then another assistant, and so on. Suddenly, in 2012, through a number of miracles and growth rate of 400%, we purchased
the facility formerly known as Normandy Farms.
Denver Equestrians was no longer just me, teaching a few lessons - the Riding School was officially launched.
Between 2008-2012, I focused on teaching, and did not ride much or allow myself to go to that vulnerable place of partnering with a horse. The hoof prints Egeris left on my heart seemed impossible to fill. When I felt the desire to
start riding again, I wanted to return to training at the upper levels where we left off
(4th Level Reserve Champions, shown, left). We accomplished so much together with the help of our trainer,
Kelly Underhill (she is now the Chief Operating Officer of DE!).
WHAT?!! Yet another Dream Horse! Donatello (shown, right) is the second amazing equine athlete that I would not dare to have dreamed of since losing Egeris. Donatello was available for lease in January of 2013, and I was ready to ride again. His build and personality is so much like Egeris. His trainer and owner agreed to lease him to ME, I was so honored, and felt like it was a miracle that he was even in my barn. Our lease term was to end that fall, but instead, thanks to the generosity of his previous owner,
we turned the lease agreement into a purchase agreement! When I asked about the date on the paperwork, I was stunned and amazed at the timing...

| Donatello |
The lease ended and Donatello officially became my horse on September 24, 2013. Exactly 5 years TO THE DATE after walking away from horses "forever."
I was convinced that I would never love a horse again. Now, I am blessed with Providence, Donatello, and a barn full of beautiful horses, gifted trainers and staff, and a community of horse-loving kids and adults. In all of this, I am reminded of God's grace, and how He is always working to restore our broken hearts to much more than we were before.
On this day, 7 years after closing the door on my heart, my passion for horses is completely restored. Not only that, God provided a career for me that is bigger and better than I would ever have imagined. It is my honor and privilege to provide the horses, facility and instructors to help guide your equestrian pursuits - or those of your horse-loving children.
Thank you for reading my story. I hope it inspires you. It's never too late to set new goals and pursue your passions. Never give up on them. They are in your heart for a reason. May God abundantly bless your life, and may all of your wildest dreams come true!
