Onboarding is Key to Retention
Having trouble finding good people and then retaining them? Most everyone probably just responded with a resounding YES ! With unemployment at an all-time record low the talent pool is extremely shallow so when we find the right person how do we keep them? Studies have concluded that companies with an engaging onboarding program retain a staggering 91% of their first year workers. Properly onboarding a new hire and warmly welcoming them into your culture is a great place to start.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • On their first day have the new hire come in an hour late to avoid the hustle and bustle of the morning rush. That way you can provide them with your full attention, focus and time.
  • Have all employment paperwork filled out ahead of time so the new employee does not spend their first day at work mindlessly filling out paperwork by themselves in an abandoned office.
  • Clean and prepare their workspace complete with a company welcome package. The welcome package could include a company polo, coffee mug with a Starbucks gift card and a personalized welcome note.
  • Facility tour
  • Meet & Greets
  • Have a 30 day agenda to review
  • Assign a work buddy
  • Question and answer session
  • Last but not least training. We are in a specialized industry with a lot of “lingo” a new hire must learn which can be overwhelming. The link below provides us with a great option for two 4 hour sessions of HVAC online onboarding. The class focuses on the following:
  • Understanding major and minor system components: What are the parts and pieces that work together to make a comfort system function?
  • The importance of proper system design and installation.
  • Efficiency requirements and their role in our industry.
  • Why IAQ is such a big part of HVAC.
  • Comfort controls: Let’s face it, they do a lot more than just read temperature.
  • We will also explore why there are so many system options and the benefits of offering higher efficient choices to your clients.
