THE BEST K-8 PROGRAM IN WISCONSIN

AND ABOUT OUR NEW READING INITIATIVE

February 23, 2023

One City Families and Supporters,

Linked to this email is our new plan for One City Elementary School and One City Preparatory Academy. The plan includes what precipitated our decision to close our 9th and 10th grades in January 2023, and what our next steps will be in the immediate future.

Please click here or on the cover of the publication to read and download the plan.

While the events over the past months have been been difficult for the entire One City community, there is a silver lining: we learned how to help the thousands of children in Dane County (and elsewhere) who annually start school several years behind academically in reading, language arts and mathematics, get caught up

We also launched our new reading initiative (see below), and are very excited about the progress we have made thus far.

Our dream going forward is that our community and state will make the education of our children - our future generation of parents, teachers and leaders - its greatest priority. With your support, advocacy and engagement, we will continue our efforts to help make this dream a reality.

When we lift up our children, we lift up our future.

Onward.

OUR NEW 'LEADERS ARE READERS' INITIATIVE

Last week, One City Founder and CEO Kaleem Caire published a video where he discussed the reading crisis in Wisconsin and the United States. In 2022, just 35% of Wisconsin 3rd graders and 32% of 4th graders nationwide were able to read successfully at their grade level. Worse, just 8% of Black and 18% of Latino 3rd graders can read at grade level in Wisconsin and the majority can barely read at all.
