One Day Voting and Modernizing at Elections BC

Elections BC has been working on voting changes since the Election Act was changed in 2019.

These changes are described in their Modernizing The Voting Process document.

From the document's introductory statement, "The changes include using electronic tabulators to count paper ballots and laptops to look up voters and cross them off the voters list. These changes will make voting faster and easier."

You'll be glad to know, as I was, that these changes do not include online voting or the use of electronic voting machines.

In the next provincial election scheduled for 2024 and at each voting place, the many ballot boxes used in 2020 and in previous elections will be replaced with one ballot tabulator.

These changes pave the way for One Day Voting because the reduction in line ups would accommodate a large turnout if almost everyone waited to vote until Election Day.

I prepared the following diagram to demonstrate the reduction in line ups:
One Day Voting Initiative Petition Information

Thinking of registering as a Canvasser?
Becoming a canvasser is one way to learn about the direct democracy process in British Columbia.

A registered canvasser will see his or her name on two lists, one with names in alphabetical order and one with names in geographical order by riding.

The alphabetical list is maintained on the Elections BC website.
  • For a sample of what this list looks like, you can check out a previous online list of canvassers.
  • It was created for the initiative to allow voluntary formation of twenty charter schools (IP-2019-001).
  • The 2019 list can be viewed here.

The geographical list will be maintained on the Social Mavrik website. It shows each canvasser's home riding. This list is currently under development.

If you are thinking of registering as a canvasser, of course there is an Elections BC application form. When a completed form is approved by the proponent (that's me) it is submitted to Elections BC. An identification card is issued and sent to the proponent who forwards it to the newly registered canvasser. The application form is here. Please send the completed form to this email address.

So far 0 canvassers are registered for signature gathering after August 9th.

One Day Voting canvassers will be invited to occasional half-hour group Zoom calls hosted by me for training and strategizing plus question and answer conversations.
Watching Brief - Another Petition - IP-2021-002
The name of the second legislative petition is: Initiative to conduct a Surrey policing binding referendum.

The petition is described on the Current Initiative Petitions page of the Elections BC website.

So far 0 canvassers are registered for signature gathering after August 16th.
