New to the One Health Conversation?
Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

Quote of the Month
“At one time, I advocated One Health as a New Beginning…….
Now it is time for an Awakening……
"We can revert to the old normal (siloed discussions, unshared information, and a selfish demeanor) or we can shed the old ways and emerge from the COVID-19 Pandemic anew. Humanity will determine its path, and hopefully there will be an awakening where we are more apt to come alongside our neighbors and provide a hand up, and not a handout, or a gesture that is less than genuine. COVID should be a lesson that we can be defeated. As depicted in Orson Welles War of the Worlds, the aliens are killed by earthly pathogens, ‘slain, after all man’s devices had failed, by the humblest things that God, in His wisdom, has put on the earth.’ “

A One Health Zoonotic Vector Borne Infectious Disease
Family Outbreak Investigation,
Breitschwerdt EB, Maggi RG, Moore CO, Robveille C, Greenberg R, Kingston E., Pathogens. 2025; 14(2):110. https://doi.org/10.3390/pathogens14020110
“As illustrated by this outbreak investigation, utilization of a One Health approach for the study of more chronic and insidious infections can also generate information that would not be achieved by focusing on illness in a single mammalian species. Unfortunately, infrastructures that support a One Health approach for the study of chronic illness outbreaks remain limited to nonexistent.”

Ecologically expanding the One Health framework to unify the microbiome sciences. Ginnan N, Crandall SG, Imchen M, Dini-Andreote F, Miyashiro TI, Singh V, Ganda E, Bordenstein SR. 0. ASM Journal mBio May 12, 2025, https://doi.org/10.1128/mbio.03147-24
“The One Health framework, traditionally focused on microbial threats, needs a bold expansion to include the full breadth of microbial diversity—from pathogenic to beneficial—within its ecological and evolutionary context. By shifting focus from disease surveillance to microbial stewardship, an integrative One Health microbiome science approach breaks down traditional silos in microbiome research, accelerating integrative and comparative science to uncover foundational insights into microbial community assembly, stability, and resilience. Ultimately, this will help unlock the full potential of microbiomes to enhance global health and sustainably manage ecosystems.”

A review of the One Health concept and its application as a tool for policy-makers,
de Macedo Couto R, Brandespim DF (2020), Int. J. One Health, 6(1): 83-89. https://doi.org/10.14202/IJOH.2020.83-89
“The application of the One Health concept to the development and implementation of public policies has come with the growing awareness of the need to involve transdisciplinary teams in solving com- plex problems in response to the challenges of the 21 st century and the Sustainable Development Goals. The key to this holistic approach is to establish links and joint actions between the human health, animal, and environmental sectors, involving different actors and institutions, either public or private.”

USDA suspends live animal imports as New World Screwworm (NWS) spreads in Mexico
May 12, 2025
Author: Ryan Gamboa In: 41KSHB (Kansas City)
NWS is a deadly parasitic fly. When NWS fly larvae burrow in the flesh of a living animal, they often cause deadly damage to the animal. It can infect livestock, pets, wildlife, occasionally birds and, in rare cases, humans. It was first detected in Mexico in November 2024. NWS has been detected in various remote Mexican farms as far north as Oaxaca and Veracruz, approximately 700 miles away from the U.S. border. Mexico and the United States have worked bilaterally to mitigate the spread. (Photo by Will Shaw/KSHB)

Qualitative Analysis of Global, EU, and UK Data Collection on Human Cases of Avian Influenza (AI): A One Health Perspective
November 2024
Author: Myra Forster-van Hijfte, DVM, CertVR, CertSAM, DipECVIM, FRCVS
This Masters Thesis explores Avian Influenza (AI). It was submitted toward the MSc in One Health degree in One Health and Infectious Diseases at the University of Glasgow. To develop the most effective strategies for managing AI, it is crucial to understand the human, animal, and environmental factors that influence the virus’s viability, transmission and the subsequent consequences of infection. This study highlights the fragmented nature of current data collection efforts and reveals major data gaps and inconsistencies that hinder effective outbreak response and understanding of the disease. It emphasises the need for a standardized, coordinated, practical, and cost-effective approach to data collection in human cases of avian influenza (AI), leveraging the integrative framework of One Health. While comprehensive data collection is crucial, it demands substantial resources, raising questions about priorities. Should efforts focus on gathering detailed data or improving broader public health measures like nutrition and sanitation? This study prompts reflection on how best to allocate limited resources in public health.

Survey on use of Community Dwelling Companion
Animals in Research
Study led by Dr. Lisa Carver, University of Queens, Ontario, Canada.
You are invited to participate in a research study to understand the challenges and benefits of involving community dwelling companion animals (non-human animals that reside in households with human caregivers/families, i.e. pets) and/or their donated tissue/cadavers (e.g., tumors that are removed by a veterinarian as part of treatment and donated for research, as well as donated cadavers after the death of a pet) in academic research. The study is specifically seeking researchers that use tissues collected in the course of regular veterinary practice (e.g, tumors or gonads) and/or include non-human animals that live in the community with human caregivers. The research can be studies such as treatment and/drug efficacy, psychological testing (e.g., maze running or task learning or other non-invasive research) or other research that does not cause unnecessary harm or suffering and provides benefit for the animal participating (e.g., access to new treatment or surgery or drugs that they would not be able to get otherwise). When you click the link you will first be provided with a letter of information and consent form. It will provide all of the background information about the study that is required by the U Queens Ethics Review Board. If you consent to participate you will immediately be taken to the questionnaire which will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. https://tinyurl.com/y6ykh9yp

Hybrid Course / Webinar Series developed in Canada by CoPEH, the Community of Practice in Ecosystem Approaches to Health
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their physical environment. It's a place where living things like plants, animals, and microbes, along with non-living things like air, water, and soil, all interact and depend on each other. In a time of an unprecedented polycrisis, connections are more important than ever. This course is designed to build relationships that can heal. Learn more about its land-based, transformative teaching style in the 2023 paper published in the Lancet Planetary Health. https://tinyurl.com/3c84u22y
Transformative learning for a sustainable and healthy future through ecosystem approaches to health: insights from 15 years of co-designed ecohealth teaching and learning experiences, Webb J, Raez-Villanueva S, Carrière PD, et.al., The Lancet Planetary Health, January 2023, Volume 7, Issue 1, e86 - e96
p. 86 " The urgency to address multiple ecological, societal, and health crises (eg, climate, social justice, and pandemic) simultaneously is intensifying. Until recently, the bulk of planetary health education has focused on ecological decline and human health implications. There has been less focus on broad moral or policy implications, such as systemic racism and fossil fuel dependence, and little acknowledgement of contributions from the wider intellectual landscape (eg, ecohealth, ecosocial approaches, One Health, and Indigenous health). Although differences in these approaches exist, they allow us to learn and work together, as the task of transformation will require considerable collaboration and exchange."
p. 93 "Multiple approaches to understanding and teaching about the complex physical and normative links between humans and ecosystems have emerged, including ecohealth, One Health, and planetary health. Although there are differences, there are enough similarities between these approaches that insights from one can be beneficial for others. For example, through collaborating across disciplines and contexts we have been able to integrate aspects from ecohealth and One Health into our course. Although One Health has traditionally been grounded in zoonotic disease response and food safety issues, this focus is expanding as programmes are developing at universities across Canada and internationally. The composition of the CoPEH-Canada team, course hosts, and students (table) has enabled One Health research and training programmes to incorporate elements of ecohealth, and for One Health researchers, teachers, and learners to contribute to the evolution of ecohealth. Recognising the shared goal of health for all— and the corresponding need to work together, share knowledge, and build trust—underscores the potential benefits of intentional cross-fertilisation with planetary health education, beyond initial efforts." https://tinyurl.com/5ak2y3zw

TDR’s One Health and Vector-borne Diseases (VBDs) Webinar Series
The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), is a global programme of scientific collaboration that helps facilitate, support and influence efforts to combat diseases of poverty. It is co-sponsored by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank and the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2023 and 2024, TDR led a webinar series to create an online network of researchers and others working in the field of vector-borne diseases (VBDs). The aim was to foster greater collaboration, to build upon each other’s initiatives and activities and create a greater impact and outreach while promoting quality research. With the belief that the inclusive and holistic One Health approach is the way forward for the future, the wish was to develop a shared understanding of One Health and an understanding and awareness on how best to prevent and manage VBDs in various settings, especially in the Global South.
- Webinar 1: Approaching vector-borne diseases through a One Health lens
- Webinar 2: One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH JPA), global action plans for VBDs, NTDs and Zoonoses.
- Webinar 3: Illustrating One Health Operationalization in Practice
- Webinar 4: Sharing AFROHUN experiences and results of two OH study projects.
- Webinar 5: Project results - Enhancing One Health surveillance and control of vector-borne diseases related to climate change in West Africa.
- Webinar 6: Project results - Application of a One Health approach for reducing the burden of vector-borne diseases in vulnerable communities in the context of climate change.
Conclusions:
1. It is key to understand that Operationalizing OH metrics requires us to understand local conditions and context.
2. It also requires us to collaborate closely with local people and relevant disciplinary players.
3. Hence, Phase 2 and Phase 3 were aimed at ensuring the involvement of the community as well as stakeholders who are well vexed in the Sub-Saharan area, vector-borne diseases as well as climate change.

Call for Papers
Special Issue of Journal Pathogens
Zoonotic Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases:
The One Health Perspective
Guest Editor: Ed Breitschwerdt
Our collective understanding of zoonotic vector-borne infections continues to benefit from a One Health problem-solving approach. In addition to causing similar clinical presentations, disease manifestations, and comparative pathological abnormalities in animal and human patients, the diagnosis, treatment, and vector-borne pathogen prevention strategies all benefit from collaboration among animal, human, and environmental health professionals. ....…This Special Issue of Pathogens welcomes original research articles, novel case studies, reviews, and research perspectives that incorporate or highlight the utility of a One Health approach for the characterization of zoonotic vector-borne diseases. As infectious disease infrastructures that support a One Health approach throughout the world remain limited or nonexistent, manuscripts that address regional, national, or international initiatives are particularly encouraged. Special Issue - CABI One Health - One Health Ethics
Guest Editors: Joann Lindenmayer, Chris Degeling
Ethics is about what actions and ways of being are considered as right or wrong, good or bad, and what values and principles should guide us. In the quest to understand and apply One Health to shared health challenges, ethics has been all too often a silent partner, unacknowledged and underappreciated. Yet ethical values and principles are inherent to how we justify and prioritize what we choose to study, how we conduct and fund studies, how we implement results, which policies and programs we implement and evaluate, and what practices we adopt. Special Issue: CABI One Health - Beyond One Ocean Health
Guest Editors: Christina Pettan-Brewer, Martin Visbeck, Marie C Riekhof, Thorsten Blenckner, Daniela Figueroa
Surprisingly, the ocean plays hardly any role in current One Health debates, even though ocean waters make up almost 71% of the planet’s surface, regulates the Earth's climate and provides nutrient-rich food and at least half of the planet's total oxygen. One Health action is immediately needed at the global Ocean Health level to identify and characterize existing and emerging health risks, particularly in the field of food safety and security, by building the capacity to collect and analyse diverse data information. https://tinyurl.com/56j7y8rb

April 4, 2025 Author: Susanna Kremer In: OneSec
Global Health, One Health, Planetary Health. These concepts are on everyone's lips—from humanitarian practitioners to international donors, from academic conferences to G7 communiqués. But how well do we truly understand them? What do they mean in a time of shifting geopolitics, environmental crisis, and institutional uncertainty? OneSec spoke with Prof. Dr. Ilona Kickbusch, one of the most influential voices in global public health, about the political power of language, the responsibilities of the sector—and why it’s time to rethink what we mean by “health.”
