New to the One Health Conversation? Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

December 2023 OHHLEP Released new report
The Panzootic Spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza
H5N1 Sublineage 2.3.4.4b: a Critical Appraisal of One Health Preparedness and Prevention
There has been a huge body of work on the early detection and response to emerging disease outbreaks following spillover of animal viruses to humans, but far less focus on primary prevention. Primary prevention starts before the first cases of human illness occur, but its implementation is challenging. It requires a focus on understanding underlying principles of disease emergence, and the prevention of spillovers through a One Health approach across human, animal and environmental health sectors. Therefore, in addition to the public health concerns that are currently already widely addressed, One Health requires a focus also on biodiversity conservation and environmental impacts, wildlife health, livestock production and consumption, and both wild and domestic animal health and welfare concerns. The recent unprecedented shift in the ecology of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) illustrates this need. http://tinyurl.com/mshew47e

WHO updates list of medically important antibiotics for use in human medicine
"Because AMR develops and transfers within and among all sectors, minimizing the risk of emergence and transmission of AMR calls for a One Health approach," the WHO wrote. "To improve the responsible and prudent use of antimicrobial agents—and in particular medically important antimicrobial agents—it is thus essential to decrease their inappropriate use across sectors." http://tinyurl.com/4sk59aj6

YOU ARE INVITED To PARTICIPATE!!
Research Study: Barriers to Diversity in
International One Health Activities
Please share widely within your networks
You and your network are invited to participate in a research study about participation in international One Health events and barriers to inclusion and diversity. This study is being conducted by Queensland University of Technology, Australia (QUT) with the aim of under-standing the main barriers that women and other underrepresented groups face in their participation in international One Health (OH) events. An international OH event is any event that brings together OH experts from different countries, and includes conferences, colloquiums, meetings and workshops. Understanding the importance of such barriers in the context of global and OH event participation and the strategies implemented to facilitate attendance is an intentional first step towards establishing OH ‘event equity’. The survey is 10 multiple-choice and 2 open-ended questions. It is available in multiple languages and should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Open until February 29, 2024. The information you provide will be stored under the QUT protocols, ensuring confidentiality. See the Participant Information Sheet for more information (http://tinyurl.com/2j798v6m ). Direct questions to katie.woolaston@qut.edu.au, cat.mcgillycuddy@ukhsa.gov.uk, maudling@yahoo.com .

Planetary Health Alliance moves from Harvard to Johns Hopkins University, launches the Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health (JHIPH)
While they are not exactly the same, the One Health and Planetary Health movements are parallel, sibling efforts pulling on the same rope in the same direction. They share many commonalities such as addressing the underlying reasons for spillover of zoonotic diseases, conservation of ecosystems and our human impact on the planet. Planetary Health focuses more on the human-environment interface, an incredibly important space in the face of climate change and environmental degradation. One Health is much broader in scope, including the human-environment interface but also arenas such as Comparative Medicine, Translational Research, Human Animal Bond, Food Safety, Non-communicable / Chronic Diseases, Social Sciences and Health Behaviours, Transdisciplinary Disaster Preparedness, Vaccines for Animal and Human Health, and Animal Welfare. Both movements seek to mainstream holistic insights and frameworks into the realm of action, policy and decision-making. Both are enormously needed. There is so much work to be done on all these fronts that we do not need to be confused. We need to find our synergies and join hands with clarity of each other’s s strengths. Congratulations to the Planetary Health Alliance on its move and its new Institute for Planetary Health at Johns Hopkins. May the One Health and Planetary Health Movements move forward in lockstep. http://tinyurl.com/3jt3khzy

American Medical Association (AMA) Journal of Ethics February 2024 Issue Focuses on
One health and One Health Topics
Health Ecology and Disease Transmission,
AMA J Ethics. 2024;26(2)
The AMA Journal of Ethics is a monthly open-access publication. The preface of this special issue states that continued climate change is expected to exacerbate zoonotic disease transmission in environments shared among plants, humans and non-human animals (domestic, agricultural, wild). Climate change diminishes biodiversity; diminished biodiversity undermines natural ecological balance dynamics between pathogens and hosts and has already influenced health care dramatically. This theme issue investigates the nature and scope of our collective responses to key changes.

Don’t Stay in Your Lane:
Why Clinicians Should be Activists for Social Change
January 2024
Authors: Imari Daniels and Judith Garber
In: The Medical Care Blog
It was the tweet heard around the healthcare world. …In 2018, after the American College of Physicians had published their position paper advocating gun control as a public health imperative, the National Rifle Association posted a tweet starting: "Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane." Clinicians immediately began posting images and sharing their experiences treating children injured or killed by firearm violence, showing undoubtedly that this is our lane…..Since 2018, the medical community has faced even more challenges that have pushed clinicians outside their usual lane. Many feel increasingly compelled to enter the social, political, and public health arenas for the sake of their country's health.

Bidirectional knowledge exchange between European and African contexts can increase the chance of success. Animal welfare advancements in East Africa’s rapidly expanding industrial animal farming sectors need to be Africa-led. Pathways Europe 2024 -
Human Dimensions of Wildlife Conference and Training
Revisiting What is Wild for Coexisting
9:00 CEST
Cordoba, Spain. Organized by the Institute for Advanced Social Studies - Spanish Research Council (IESA-CSIC), University of Córdoba, and the Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources, Colorado State University. The concept of “wild” often refers to elements of nature that remain untamed and unaltered by human intervention. Some argue that in today’s interconnected world, true wild, untouched by human influence, is exceedingly rare or perhaps even nonexistent. In this human-dominated era, the Anthropocene, new challenges and new debates arise around what is wild as well as what is natural. This program is designed to address the myriad issues that arise as people and wildlife struggle to coexist in a sustainable and healthy manner. Organized session proposal deadline, March 12, 2024.
