New to the One Health Conversation?
Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, plants and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

United Stated National One Health Framework to Address Zoonotic Diseases and Advance Public Health Preparedness in the United States (NOHF-Zoonoses, 2025- 2029)
Released in January 2025, the NOHF-Zoonoses represents a coordinated effort between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Department of the Interior (DOI), with contributions from 23 federal agencies representing eight departments. It establishes a shared vision, mission, and goals to strengthen collaboration across sectors to address zoonotic diseases, such as COVID-19, mpox, avian influenza, Ebola and other One Health issues. This framework will serve as a roadmap to enhance federal coordination and collaboration, inform policies, and improve preparedness and response capabilities in the United States. While it focuses on One Health coordination at the federal level, its success depends on robust partnerships with state, Tribal, local, and territorial (STLT), non-governmental organizations, academia, and private sector partners as well as collaboration with relevant international partners. The U.S. One Health Coordination Unit (U.S. OHCU) and the NOHF-Zoonoses will enhance U.S. ability to jointly prevent, detect, and respond to zoonotic disease threats and related One Health issues. This initiative will improve efficiency across the U.S. government by enhancing collaboration across all relevant sectors with governmental and non-governmental partners while optimizing resource use in order to protect the health, safety, and security of people, animals, plants, and our shared environment. For more details and to read the new framework, visit the Federal One Health Coordination website. https://tinyurl.com/y9d4krfp

World Veterinary Association (WVA) has released a new
Model Veterinarian’s Oath
The primary purpose of the Veterinarians’ Oath is to formally commit new veterinarians to the ethical and professional standards of the veterinary profession. It is most used to swear in new veterinarians upon their entry into the profession. This oath serves as a pledge to uphold ethical principles, acknowledge professional responsibilities, build public trust, commit to lifelong learning, and promote a global perspective on animal and public health. It reads:
“I, as a Member of the Global Veterinary Profession, do solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge, skill and training:
- To prevent, diagnose, treat and manage pain and disease in all animal species to the best of my ability in keeping with the principles of veterinary ethics and relevant law.
- To communicate and help prevent the impact of zoonotic diseases and public health risks and environmental contaminants of animal origin.
- To advocate for the humane and sustainable management of terrestrial, aerial, and aquatic animals in their diverse ecosystems through stewardship to reduce environmental impacts.
- To contribute to animal, human, and environmental health by continually developing my competencies as a health professional, acting with integrity and compassion, and promoting health and welfare of humans and animals.”

Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs) Technical Guide
Updated (2026)
Hosted by Animal Health Metrics based at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland the GBADs Technical Guide details methods it uses to understand the economic burden of diseases in livestock and aquatic species. It is a living document that will evolve as current GBADs methods are refined, and new methods developed. Version 1 released in July 2024 covered the five key methodologies currently used in GBADs analyses: Livestock biomass, the economic value of farmed animals, the ‘Animal Health Loss Envelope (AHLE)’, attribution to specific causes, and the wider economic impact of animal disease burdens. The2026 updated version includes revisions to chapter 4: the Animal Health Loss Envelope, and chapter 5: cause-specific burden estimation. WOAH’s First State of the World’s Animal Health Report 2025
Released May 2025, this report offers a comprehensive overview of the global animal health landscape. It begins by highlighting the positive impact of vaccination as one measure on a selection of high priority animal diseases and challenges – including African swine fever, avian influenza, brucellosis, foot and mouth disease, lumpy skin disease, mammalian tuberculosis, rabies, peste des petits ruminants, infectious salmon anaemia and antimicrobial resistance. WOAH urges governments and partners to invest now in resilient animal health systems and the people who sustain them.

American Veterinary Association (AVMA) launches new One Health framed Biosecurity Resources webpage
Whether in clinical practice, production agriculture, animal research, or other settings where animals are kept, veterinary professionals play an important role in implementing and promoting sound biosecurity practices. A key part of this responsibility is developing a biosecurity plan tailored to the needs of a particular situation. This means describing potential pathways for disease introduction or spread in specific animal species and environments—including their zoonotic potential—and describing the measures that are being or will be taken to mitigate those risks. https://tinyurl.com/ye25fhbv

Also of Biosecurity interest - New film from WOAH!!!
The Fever
“Without coordinated efforts a perpetrator could cause devastation to agriculture and to communities alike……and get away with it.”
In a world more connected than ever, danger travels faster than we can see. A single act, deliberate or reckless, could unleash consequences beyond imagination. WOAH, asked a question: What if it happened tomorrow? This short film imagines a biological threat intentionally released on a farm and the ripple effect that follows. It’s a story of vigilance, courage, cooperation and... the power of knowledge. Because when a crisis hits, animal health workers are our first line of defence - and only together can we prevent, detect and respond to the threats that endanger us all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZW1atcfCnA

The Helmholtz Association is a non-profit, registered scientific organization in Germany. It functions as the umbrella organization for 18 legally independent research centers and operates primarily as a government-funded research entity, with roughly 90% of its financing provided by federal and state governments. One of its institutes, the Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH), is a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). HIOH and partners are now launching their first unique One Health cohort initiative in and around Taï National Park, Côte d’Ivoire, as part of the One Health Exploratories. This long-term effort aims to deepen the understanding of the links between human, animal and environmental health in order to detect potential spillover events early and strengthen preparedness for future pandemics. Teams will engage with 1,500 people living in villages around the park. Temporary examination centers will be set up to examine human participants, collect samples, and conduct structured questionnaires. In parallel, veterinary teams will collect samples from domestic and farm animals, while a dedicated small mammal team will sample rodents and bats within the villages. This work will be complemented by a comprehensive environmental monitoring program, including water sampling and biodiversity surveys. https://tinyurl.com/f6m9z6ms

The One Health Behaviours website and Zoonotic Behavioral Resource Assessments (ZBRA) Toolkit
“Human behavior drives epidemics…..and can stop them.” The One Health Behaviors website was created under the USAID Breakthrough ACTION project to equip researchers, public health practitioners, government officials, and other implementing partners or stakeholders to conduct behavioral research on priority zoonotic diseases and to learn from existing research. This website is now maintained by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP). The ZBRA toolkit is a repository for research on select zoonotic diseases with an emphasis on risk and prevention behaviors, individual and sociocultural drivers, and the policy and communication environment that influences those behaviors. Under ‘Country Profiles’ each of the Breakthrough ACTION Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) countries has a page that summarizes the priority zoonotic diseases for that country, the stakeholders involved in One Health activities, and existing Breakthrough ACTION research. Where possible, the pages also offer a case study explaining how behavioral research was used to inform social and behavior change interventions in the country. https://tinyurl.com/mr39wbxf

CABI Launched The One Health Research Roadmap 2025-2030
The Three Big Questions
Where are we now? Where are the research gaps? and Where do we go next???
The growing importance of One Health has exposed the need to distill understanding of what we know and what we don’t know about this cross-sectoral approach for tackling complex health challenges. To address this knowledge gap, CABI’s One Health Hub has produced a roadmap to guide decision makers in exploring evidence about the evolution of One Health research, current knowledge gaps, and future research priorities. The Roadmap was unveiled at webinars (see below under Recent Events) and discussions in partnership with the FAO, highlighting trends, future priorities, and the role of plant health. https://tinyurl.com/bdcvernd

Vampire bats in Peru show signs of past H5N1 infection. In Peru, over a dozen vampire bats have been found carrying H5N1 antibodies, indicating exposure to the virus, researchers report November 11 at bioRxiv.org. The finding is “very worrisome,” says Vincent Munster, a virus ecologist at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Mont., who was not involved in the study. Each time the virus jumps to a new mammalian host, he says, it gains opportunities to mutate and evolve, potentially bringing it closer to spreading among people. - “Viruses causing epidemics seem especially common among the Orthomyxoviridae and Coronaviridae viral families. Those epidemics have routinely caught medical professionals off-guard and caused largescale disease and death. Two recently discovered viruses, influenza D and canine coronavirus HuPn-2018 (CCoV-HuPn-2018), seem especially worthy of closer public health attention……the limited data regarding these novel, newly detected viruses indicate that they are a major threat to public health. If we wish to avoid being fooled again by a novel virus suddenly gaining efficient human-to-human transmissibility and causing large human epidemics, we would be wise to develop better surveillance systems and new countermeasures for these and similar viruses.”

Ethics for One Health Approaches: A Roadmap for Future Directions
Author: Authors: Henrik Lerner Published by Springer.
This book explores the possibility of finding an approach to bioethics that covers all One Health approaches, i.e. One Health, EcoHealth, Planetary Health or One Welfare, each with their holistic and diverse perspectives. Although some attempts exist to find such an ethics of One Health, this is still very much novel ground. It starts with how the One Health approaches have developed since 2004 and ethical suggestions that have been put forward followed by four chapters analyzing these attempts and trying to find a roadmap forward for One Health ethics. The book provides no final solution but is a comprehensive attempt to lay a foundation for further discussions within One Health ethics, discussing how bioethics can be advanced and expanded. https://tinyurl.com/5743axd3

One Health in the Media:
Why Coverage Must Improve
February 13, 2026
Author: Richard Seifman In IMPAKTER
"One Health has emerged as an important framework for understanding the intertwined health challenges of the 21st century. Its rise has been shaped profoundly by media coverage across print, radio, television, and social media. Each medium has contributed uniquely: print provides depth, radio provides narrative intimacy, television provides visual power, and social media provides the widest reach and democratization……We are seeing climate change accelerating, biodiversity declining, and global interconnectedness dramatically expanding. As these concerns heighten, One Health will be increasingly central to public discourse. But to do so, media coverage across all platforms will need to do better:
- Reporting must highlight upstream drivers — deforestation, agricultural intensification, and climate change — before any crisis occurs.
- Scientists, operational experts, and journalists will need to collaborate to more effectively counter false narratives, particularly on social media.
- Featuring success is as important as paying attention only to bad news, and the need to show that One Health is not only about health crises, but is also about improving conservation, and contributing to sustainable agriculture and water — in short, well-being for everyone."

Factory farming of fish is brewing pathogens
February 10, 2026
Author: Neil Vora In: Los Angeles Times
“Over the past few decades, the seafood industry has completely revolutionized how it feeds the world. As many wild fish populations have plummeted, hunted to oblivion by commercial fleets, fish farming has become all the rage, and captive-breeding facilities have continually expanded to satiate humanity’s ravenous appetite….My most immediate concern, the one that really makes me sweat, is the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria among farmed fish…..Because of this overuse for prevention purposes, more antibiotics are used in seafood raised by aquaculture than are used in humans or for other farmed animals per kilogram. Many of these molecules will end up settling in the water or nearby sediment, where they can linger for weeks. In turn, the 1 million individual bacteria found in every drop of seawater will be put to the evolutionary test, and the most antibiotic-resistant will endure."

Stopping Nipah Before It Spreads
February 4, 2026
Author: Genevieve Rajewskik In: Tufts Now
Following a recent outbreak in India, two Tufts University experts explain how Nipah virus moves from animals to people—and how smarter prevention can reduce future risk. Nipah virus is carried by fruit bats (Pteropus species), which do not become ill but can pass the virus to people or livestock through contaminated food or close contact. Once humans are infected, the virus can spread from person to person, usually through direct contact with bodily fluids while caring for someone who is seriously sick. In people, Nipah most often causes severe brain swelling, known as encephalitis, and sometimes respiratory illness. Image by byrdyak on Freepik.

Why Ecopsychology Matters Now
January 24, 2026
Author: NaturalAcademy.org In: Natural Academy Newsletter
"Re-situating psyche within the living world as a root to our return to wholeness, and what applied ecopsychology looks like in practice at Natural Academy. Ecopsychology emerged as a response to a profound historical and cultural rupture between human beings and the more-than-human world. As articulated in The Project of Ecopsychology, (set out by Andy Fisher in his book Radical Ecopsychology) the field proposes that the ecological crisis is not only an environmental problem, but also a psychological, cultural and spiritual one. Modern psychology, shaped by Western dualism, has largely confined its attention to the inner, interpersonal and social realms, rendering the natural world psychologically invisible….. Ecopsychology seeks to mend this split by recognising the human–nature relationship as a real and reciprocal relationship, not merely a backdrop or resource for human life. It reframes psyche as embedded within the living world and understands human wellbeing, identity and meaning as inseparable from our participation in ecological systems. "

Avian Influenza:
A One Health Imperative for Global Health Governance
January 7, 2026
Author : Lakshmy Ramakrishnan
In: Observer Research Foundation (India)
"The global resurgence of avian influenza illustrates how zoonotic threats transcend health sectors, reinforcing the need for an integrated One Health framework in pandemic preparedness and governance….. Scientists are concerned that since numerous H5N1 strains are circulating in poultry, wild birds, and dairy cows, concomitant with seasonal flu strains, it may only be a matter of time before a new strain emerges. A recent modelling study by Indian researchers demonstrated that in the case of H5N1, sustained human-to-human transmission will likely occur after 2-10 individuals are infected. The study highlights how narrow the window is between a zoonotic spillover event and sustained transmission amongst humans.….Effectively operationalising a One Health approach to emerging global health challenges within a global governance framework is now of utmost importance." https://tinyurl.com/5szkfcdm

This book analyzes the literature of the One Health Initiative (OHI) team as part of a thematic review of the field’s development from 2004 to June 2023….....the narrative is built upon the historical contributions of four key figures, two physicians and two veterinarians, who bridged the gap between human and animal health: Rudolf Virchow, MD (1821-1902), William Osler, MD (1849-1919), Calvin W. Schwabe, DVM, MPH, ScD (1927-2006), and James H. Steele, DVM, MPH (1913-2013). The author…….expresses a fulsome account of other current and past One Health leaders and activist organizations within the field while expounding a non-biased, ethical all-inclusive Universalist (embracing all, promoting unity) and Non-sectarian (not limited to one group) text."

We know how to prevent bird flu.
So why aren’t we?
January 14, 2026
Authors: Ellen P. Carlin and Gwendolen Reyes-Illg In: STAT News
“The virus is expected to kill millions of animals this winter…..Vaccination, the obvious strategy, means more animals remain healthy, fewer are culled, and the USDA spends way less paying farmers. France reduced its outbreak size by up to 99% when it vaccinated ducks…..Global experts continually flag the need for a One Health approach, including poultry vaccination, before it’s too late. ……The concern is that if a country vaccinates its animals, they could still become infected subclinically, leading to invisible infections. So the real trade barrier isn’t vaccination, it’s infection: Countries don’t want to import infected animals or contaminated products. ….The answer is diagnostic testing….Vaccinating and testing will work.”

Why Bangladesh's veterinarians matter more than we think
January 7, 2026
Author: K. B. M. Saiful Islam
In: The Dailey Star (Bangladesh)
The role of Bangladesh's vets is not limited to treating sick cows, poultry, or pets. They stand at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health -- an intersection that global experts now call "One Health." In a country where people live in close and constant contact with domestic and peridomestic animals, where zoonoses and multidrug‑resistant organisms are increasingly reported, veterinarians are not peripheral actors; they are central to national health security. Yet their contributions remain largely invisible. Their shortages are rarely discussed, their challenges seldom
reach the policy agenda, and their potential, which is immense, transformative, and urgently needed, remains under-used. To understand why this matters, and why Bangladesh must rethink its

The critical role of Bangladesh’s veterinarians
January 10, 2026
Author: Prof. Dr. K. B. M. Saiful Islam
In: The Daily Star (Bangladesh)
Bangladesh’s public health story is often told through the lens of hospitals, epidemics, and human suffering. We speak of dengue seasons that grow longer, of malnutrition that persists, and of climate driven diseases entering new regions. Yet beneath these visible crises lies another struggle; one that begins not in hospital wards but in farms, fish ponds, live bird markets, and the countless households where humans and animals share space, water, and risk. This struggle determines whether our food is safe, whether outbreaks can be contained, and whether lifesaving antibiotics will remain effective for the next generation. At the centre of this quiet frontline stand Bangladesh’s veterinarians.

AMR crisis in Bangladesh: A One Health call to action
January 18, 2026
Author: Prof. Dr. K. B. M. Saiful Islam
In: Daily Times of Bangladesh
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is quietly becoming one of Bangladesh’s most dangerous health threats. Families, farmers, and even future generations are at risk as antibiotics lose their power due to misuse in people, animals, and the environment. From self‑medication to unregulated drug sales and routine antibiotic use in poultry and fish, resistant bacteria are spreading far beyond hospitals; into homes, food, and waterways. The article urges Bangladesh to act through a true One Health approach, where doctors, veterinarians, environmental experts, and communities work together. New FAO Virtual Learning Course:
Evaluating the Value of One Health
From the FAO One Health Knowledge Nexus Community of Practice (CoP) Return on Investment (ROI) for One Health and One Health Investment Planning.
Despite a growing recognition of the potential of One Health to generate added value compared to single-sector or discipline approaches, investment in One Health remains limited. A central reason for this gap is the lack of robust evidence to quantify the economic and societal returns of One Health actions. Decision makers often struggle to justify long-term, multisectoral investments when there is a dearth of comparative data on costs and benefits. Without such evidence, prevention-focused and integrated solutions risk being underfunded in favour of short-term or reactive measures. This is where economic evaluation is essential. Registration for this course is now open, currently offered exclusively to ROI OH CoP members. Anyone can join the ROI OH CoP. February 18, 2026 Webinar
Continuing the Conversation: Openness and Global Perspectives in Communicating About Research That Requires the Care and Use of Animals
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm Eastern
Hosted by the (US) National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Animal Health Sciences, Conservation, and Research (BAHSCR). This session focuses on what “openness” looks like in practice. Speakers from the U.S. and abroad will share concrete examples of how institutions are translating communication principles into real policies, materials, and engagement approaches, shaped by different regulatory environments and cultural expectations. We will explore how organizations are building trust through proactive, two-way dialogue that is plain-spoken, values-aware, and grounded in ethical considerations. Through short “flash talk” case studies and a moderated discussion, participants will hear what institutions have changed to increase transparency, what enabled those changes, and what lessons may be adaptable in other settings. The session will also highlight international frameworks such as the UK Concordat on Openness on Animal Research and related efforts, alongside U.S.-based openness initiatives.

H5N1 Threat: Oceans Health, Biodiversity and Pandemic Risk – Experiences from the Global South
4 pm GMT, 8 am PT, 11 am Peru, 1 pm Brasil
H5N1 challenges us again to integrate actions and gather coordinated efforts for an understanding of this epizootic all over the globe. This webinar gathers experts in a panel to discuss their experience and insights, working in labs and in the field, looking for answers in the global south and for evidence for path for controlling disease and/or finding the source and cause. What these researchers have in common is their acknowledgement that One Health is a premise to step into research and how their lived experiences finding the real connections lead to 'living' One Health. This webinar will also present an oceanic and 'without border's view on Avian Influenza (H5N1). Link to join the event: https://meet.google.com/jnv-ibwo-fox

February 20, 2026 NAOHUN Webinar Series
A One Health Approach to Addressing Food Safety Issues.
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Eastern
Speaker: Dr. Kerry Cooper, University of Arizona.
Over the last few decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the consumption of fresh produce in the U.S., which has led to produce becoming the number one source of foodborne outbreaks. Produce safety represents a major One Health matrix, classically characterized in 2018 by the largest Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak in U.S. history. This outbreak involved a large cattle feedlot and irrigation water canals that were used to irrigate romaine lettuce fields, and resulted in 210 illnesses, 96 hospitalizations, and 5 deaths. The Cooper laboratory employs a variety of different approaches to address the distinct facets of produce safety using a One Health matrix to improve food safety overall for U.S. consumers. https://tinyurl.com/34y3xrff Join the live stream here.
