New to the One Health Conversation?

Learn - What is One Health?

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, plants and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional  organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

Media for One Health Project -

Raising awareness on "One Health" among Media

in Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines)

South-East Asia faces growing health risks due to high human and animal density, environmental degradation, and climate change. The "One Health" approach offers a holistic solution by linking ecosystem health with human and animal well-being. Yet, awareness of this concept remains low in the region, especially among media outlets who could play a large role in raising awareness. The Media for One Health project is led by CFI (the French Media Development Agency) and CIRAD (the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement or the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development). It is supported by the French ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and empowers journalists to better inform the public to help prevent future crises through accurate, impactful reporting on interconnected health and environmental issues. One Health Training Session for 12 Vietnamese Journalists.

April, 2025. To raise awareness of the One Health approach in Southeast Asia, the CFI and CIRAD Media for One Health Project launched a training session in Vietnam in partnership with Vietnam Television (VTV) who hosted the workshop. Led by experts Prof. Daan Vink and Dr. Pham Duc Phuc, the five-day workshop empowered 12 VTV journalists with the tools to understand and communicate the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Through hands-on activities and real-world examples, participants sharpened their storytelling skills and learned to make complex issues accessible to the public. This initiative strengthens media’s role in crisis prevention and sustainable development across the region. Point of Contact: brieuc.lahellec@cfi.fr https://tinyurl.com/2xnz69z3

‘Man-eating’ screw worm turns hospital into horror show

Honduras. “….the New World screw worm, a tiny parasite that has recently re-emerged in Central America and Mexico after being effectively eradicated….The blame for this unwelcome revival lies squarely with human disruption to the region’s delicate ecological balance…….Illegal cattle smuggling, long considered one of the most efficient money-laundering routes for the drug cartels which terrorised San Pedro Sula, is regarded as the main reason for the accelerating advance….Across Honduras, there have been hundreds of human screw worm cases over the last few months. Last week, doctors in the capital identified the youngest victim as a 19-day-old baby….The screw worm fly needs only land briefly on any warm cavity or wound to lay its eggs, a process so fleeting that a person might not even notice. https://tinyurl.com/4rf4k39y

CDC: Bird flu virus that infected Michigan dairy farmer capable of airborne transmission

June 5, 2025

  • New CDC research suggests the H5N1 avian influenza virus that infected a Michigan dairyfarmworker can be transmitted through the air.
  • The revelation, the study's authors wrote, suggests "an ongoing threat to public health and requires continual surveillance and risk assessment ... to prepare for the next influenza pandemic."

Since 2022, there have been 70 confirmed and probable human cases of bird flu in the U.S. One person in Louisiana, who was exposed to wild birds and a backyard flock, died. To date, there have been no reports of human-to-human transmission, according to the CDC.”.... Despite its growing popularity, One Health should not be seen as a silver bullet solution to all health challenges, as many are not at the interface between sectors. What’s more, there have been serious difficulties translating One Health from ideas into practice, and many barriers still exist to operationalizing the concept effectively…..This explainer introduces the concept of One Health to beginners. It covers the key ideas, origins, actors and debates, outlining One Health’s advantages relative to sectoral approaches to tackling today’s health threats. The cases at the end of the explainer provide additional examples of the added value of taking a One Health approach to address some of today’s most pressing health issues.

A Working Group of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA)

Founded in 2021, ODH aims at figuring out and encompassing new research ways, meant to stem from a new kind of collaboration among practitioners in the One Health and Digital Health communities. The integration to be achieved between human, as well as veterinary and environmental data for supporting “predictive, personalized, preventive, participatory (P4)” processes end-to-end will allow both communities to benefit from efficient interactions over time in order to the delivery of near-real- time, data-driven contributions to systems medicine and systems ecology. This will also allow citizens to engage with their individual health and well-being. Special Issue:  CABI One Health - Beyond One Ocean Health

Guest Editors: Christina Pettan-Brewer, Martin Visbeck, Marie C Riekhof, Thorsten Blenckner, Daniela Figueroa

Surprisingly, the ocean plays hardly any role in current One Health debates, even though ocean waters make up almost 71% of the planet’s surface, regulates the Earth's climate and provides nutrient-rich food and at least half of the planet's total oxygen. One Health action is immediately needed at the global Ocean Health level to identify and characterize existing and emerging health risks, particularly in the field of food safety and security, by building the capacity to collect and analyse diverse data information. https://tinyurl.com/56j7y8rb

European doctors and veterinarians highlight common challenges on mental health and

well-being

May 19, 2025 Press release from the The Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) and The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE)

In recognition of European Mental Health Week, the FVE and the CPME have come together to highlight that the well-being of doctors and veterinarians is critical to the future of health systems. Protecting their mental health and well-being is not just a moral obligation, but essential to retaining a strong, resilient workforce. The One Health approach: Is it truly one health?

2023 Monograph posted on CooperaSalud website

Authors: medicusmundi and Médicos del Mundo

CooperaSalud is an online tool that provides interactive access to data, analysis, and recommendations in the Annual Report: Health in Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action. This report is a joint initiative between medicusmundi and Médicos del Mundo (Doctors of the World), two Spanish NGOs. Since 2002, it has offered a critical analysis of international, state, and decentralized Official Development Assistance (ODA) in the sphere of health care and humanitarian action. https://tinyurl.com/3htruead

https://tinyurl.com/yrum379d

This Monograph (though not the report) points out criticisms of One Health:

“In theory, the three areas that One Health covers should have been developed equally, but the environmental dimension has lagged behind human and animal health. Additionally, even though human, animal and environmental health should be treated on an equal basis, this is not currently the case."

The authors offer 7 solutions:

  • Increase awareness and advocacy of One Health priorities.
  • Identify gaps and opportunities.
  • Improve One Health governance.
  • Support funding/investment in One Health.
  • Use a One Health joint action plan as a blueprint for action.
  • Incorporate the One Health approach into all relevant policies.
  • Facilitate One Health research, knowledge and capacity.”

Influenza at the Land-Sea Interface:

A One Health Perspective from the Coasts of Peru

10 AM Pacific

Hosted by University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Center for Oceans & Human Health. Speaker Ricardo Castillo Neyra. The 2022 outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Peru has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of marine birds and poultry, and confirmed spillover events into marine mammal populations.. Concurrently, rapid economic development in coastal Peru—driven by the expansion of agriculture, poultry production, and mining—has intensified human–animal–environment interactions. The close proximity of industrial and small-scale poultry farms and mines to protected natural reserves and marine ecosystems creates conditions ripe for pathogen emergence and amplification. These anthropogenic pressures are compounded by limited integrated surveillance systems and fragmented One Health governance frameworks. This presentation will explore the current landscape of zoonotic influenza risk along the Peruvian coast through a One Health lens. Free but you must Register. https://tinyurl.com/bdhewsmx

Theme: Appreciating Nature’s Benefits

Estes Park, Colorado, USA. Hosted by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and Human Dimensions of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. Enhancing Public Awareness of One Health Through Strategic Media Engagement

Presenters: Dr. Tu Tu Zaw Win, veterinary epidemiologist at the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), and Brieuc Lahellec of CFI. ..”it is crucial to raise public awareness about the interactions between humans, animals, and the environment in order to promote early reporting, prevent future disease outbreaks, and reduce the risk of potential pandemics. Media plays a critical role in bridging this gap by translating complex scientific concepts into accessible information and fostering public understanding of health risks and preventive measures. Through accurate reporting, compelling storytelling, and science-based communication, media can help to raise awareness of One Health issues, encourage behavioural change, and promote collaboration. Strengthening the capacity of the media to effectively communicate One Health principles is therefore vital to advancing integrated health strategies and enhancing preparedness and response to health threats at both local and regional levels.” Contact ohss@onehealthcommission.org for access to the recording,
