New to the One Health Conversation? Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

The 8th World One Health Congress
September 20-23, 2024
An Amazing One Health Experience in Cape Town, S. Africa
Throughout the four days of the Congress more than 1,400 participants from 87 countries were privileged to hear from leading experts addressing global One Health science and policy issues. 400 speakers across 70 sessions, and 600 scientific posters were presented. But one of the most exciting ‘happenings’ was the networking, getting to meet colleagues in person that you may have worked remotely with for years. See recap videos from each day:
Multiple groups were ‘meeting up’ in the halls, like participants of the OHC’s One Health Social Sciences (OHSS) group and of the newly formed Women for One Health (WfOH) organization who were able to make it to Cape Town.

Raising our Collective One Health Voice:
UN General Assembly - Summit of the Future Fails to include One Health
Simultaneous to the WOHC in Cape Town, World leaders were meeting in New York at the UN General Assembly Summit of the Future and adopting a Pact for the Future. However, that Summit program failed to include One Health in discussions in spite of the UN Quadripartite (WHO, FAO, WOAH, UNEP) actively embracing and leading for One Health. When attendees at the 8th World One Health Congress became aware of this serious oversight, on 21 September, 2024 they collectively prepared and shared a message to the UN General Secretary, the Summit of the Future Actions Days and other UN contacts urging that One Health be fully embraced with specific suggestions of where it could be included in the draft PACT.
| |
|
A message (see image insert above, right) was also sent to all Congress attendees providing the opportunity for sign on (as individuals or organizations) in support of the Collective Call. That sign-on sheet remains open here. As of 15 October, 27 Organizations and 94 Individuals have signed in support. This moment marks a 'first' for the international One Health movement to collaboratively raise its 'collective' voice.
Unfortunately, the call message arrived too late to be incorporated and the final Summit of the Future Pact failed to include the need for implementing a One Health way of thinking and decision making in all plans for the future. However, the collective message exercise demonstrated a significant appetite for collaborative, coordinated communications efforts from international One Health networks.

Summit of the Future:
Will One Health Be Given Its Due?
September 10, 2024
Author: Richard Seifman In: IMPAKTER
At the coming UN Summit, follow-up commitments and actions need to be taken in response to the growing recognition that human, animal, plant, and ecosystem health are all related, and coordinated action is our best answer to old and new challenges…The plea here is for Summit for the Future’s two-day session on September 22-23, 2024, to treat One Health as a new priority. It is a golden opportunity. Let’s hope the participants do so. https://tinyurl.com/bdd5bds3

Political Declaration of the High-level Meeting (HLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
September 26, 2024. The declaration sets targets on some key areas for progress — such as reducing deaths from AMR by 10% by 2030 and mobilizing US$100 million to implement AMR National Action Plans — but misses opportunities to more responsibly steward antibiotic use in food systems, including in livestock. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley declared it an “impressive blueprint for action,” but also stressed that collective action and sustainable financing was needed now to accelerate the agenda. Dr. Tedros, along with leaders of all quadripartite organizations, stressed the integrated, whole-of-society approach required to reach the declaration’s targets. This comes as the Center for Global Development released a new report with the most comprehensive analysis to date of AMR impact on global economies and health systems to date. https://tinyurl.com/mc32w87a

The European Union's "One Health" Commitment:
A Gap between Rhetoric and Action?
Presentation at the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) 12th Biennial Conference of the Standing Group on the European Union (SGEU), Universidade NOVA, June 19-21, 2024, authored and presented by Óscar Fernández , Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals – IBEI, https://ecpr.eu/Events/Event/PaperDetails/73127
AI Overview of the presented paper: “Yes, there is a significant gap between the European Union's stated "One Health" commitment and its concrete actions, with critics arguing that while the rhetoric around the approach is strong, the practical implementation and necessary intersectoral collaboration often fall short, leading to concerns about a lack of real progress on issues like antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic disease prevention.” https://tinyurl.com/2vymnx9x

Eating wild animals - Rewards, risks and recommendations: Better management of wild meat value chains through One Health
This report has been launched by International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in partial response to calls made in the Global North during the COVID-19 pandemic to end the hunting, selling and eating of meat from wild animals. It argues that such a ban would be both impossible and arguably immoral to enforce, due to the benefits wild meat provides for many millions of mostly poor communities. It also acknowledges the risks inherent in eating wild meat and recommends reshaping the wild meat trade. Based on literature reviews, this report seeks to understand wild meat consumption and the value chains that supply it—including hunting, harvesting, marketing and consumption. It recommends practices and research priorities to mitigate the biodiversity conservation and zoonotic risks related to its consumption. https://tinyurl.com/fchdt7t4

Two Students Call for One Health Education starting in Primary/Secondary School. “We wrote this article to express to supporters of the One Health Initiative our insights into the adoption of One Health from a student perspective. We hope that our stories not only illustrate our enthusiasm but also demonstrate a shared sense of urgency for One Health education…….. Primary school is an ideal setting for introducing One Health education, as elementary classrooms are dynamic environments where students have not yet divided subjects into separate silos. Such integration will help K-12 students better contextualize interdisciplinary topics and prepare them to address the complex issues of our interconnected world. Teachers are increasingly motivated to adopt One Health education because of its illuminative breadth. And Amazing Life and Career
Passing of One Health Champion, Dr. Ade Ojeniyi (DVM, MD)
October 10, 2024, Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr. Ojeniyi lived big and embraced One Health, One Medicine, with far-reaching breadth and depth. He experienced One Health before the concept was coined while growing up in Nigeria where he observed the very close contact between domestic animals and humans in cities, towns and villages. Seeing people and animals suffering from hunger and diseases, he was driven by his desire to improve the livelihoods of all living creatures. These memorable experiences, married with his humanity, compassion and desire to serve, led him to receive doctorate degrees in both Veterinary and Human Medicine in Denmark. He also earned a Diploma in International Health, and is a certified Diplomate of Chinese Acupuncture, with application in the therapy of both Humans and Animals - another illustration of his commitment to One Health. Just this past June, 2024, he visited the U.S. to attend the AVMA annual meeting where he received the American Veterinary One Health Society Gold Cane Award.

Why Vultures, Bats, Hyenas, and Other Such Species Matter
September 19, 2024
Author: Richard Seifman In: IMPAKTER
“Protecting those animals in danger of extinction is essential, but so are those that play crucial roles in our ecosystem…..Vultures, bats, and hyenas, for example, affect human health in beneficial ways, whether through dealing with waste management or disease control. Falling populations of these helpers lead to cascading effects on human health, potentially increasing morbidity and mortality rates in human populations, especially among vulnerable groups such as infants….UN entities, including the World Health Organization, the World Organization of Animal Health, the Food and Agriculture Organizations, and the United Nations Environmental Programme, have been working together to underscore this core concern of the One Health community, namely that most recent infectious diseases have zoonotic origins, such as HIV/AIDS, Zika, Ebola, Dengue Fever, and Malaria.” https://tinyurl.com/2zpvaab8

PAHO Policy CD59/9 - One Health: A Comprehensive Approach for Addressing Health Threats at the Human-Animal-Environment Interface
July 20, 2021. The aim of this policy on One Health is to foster coordination and collaboration among the different governance frameworks of human, animal, plant, and environmental health programs in order to better prevent and prepare for current and future health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface. Of priority concern for One Health are risks that affect the systems on which society depends—health, agriculture/animal production, and environment. The policy includes six strategic lines of action that can provide valuable guidance for the actions of national health authorities and for the technical cooperation activities of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB or the Bureau). https://tinyurl.com/44px6p63

"What does One Health want? Despite its touted interdisciplinarity, to date there has been limited engagement with the social sciences and humanities – in particular with streams of critical social theory that enable a response to this question. In this paper we draw on the critical social sciences to consider how One Health is defined, conceptualized, and positioned, and discuss what we see as vital challenges within One Health that both limit its potential for meaningful change and contribute to a potential for ongoing harm – namely, medicalization, anthropocentrism, and colonial-capitalism."

Pathways 2025 Conference - Human Dimensions of Wildlife: Appreciating Nature's Benefits
The recreational participant base has changed over time, and, in turn, the popularity of outdoor recreation activities is shifting. Historically, a space that has been focused on hunting and angling, now includes activities such as birding and wildlife viewing, hiking, and rock climbing as popular avenues to engage in natural areas and on public lands. As interest in these activities continues to grow, wildlife agency leadership will need to adapt to help diverse communities connect with and appreciate nature’s benefits in both new and more traditional forms of engagement. The theme, Appreciating Nature’s Benefits, focuses on the health and wellbeing aspects of connecting with nature, as well as the benefits that communities gain from engaging in outdoor activities. This conference will explore complex issues in wildlife management, use of social science, effective communication, and changing landscapes and seascapes due to climate change and land use management practices. https://tinyurl.com/mu56hfpb

Biosecurity in Context
What would it look like to co-create biosecurity measures that recognize the complexity of differing social, environmental, ethical and economic priorities? What steps do we need to take to achieve biosecurity in context? What structural barriers prevent this collectivised work? The suitability and sustainability of biosecurity measures that promote standardised industrial animal agriculture is questionable, given the heterogenous farming systems and diverse social contexts that exist in reality. Prof. Stephen Hinchliffe (University of Exeter) chaired this workshop with Prof. Nenene Qekwana (University of Pretoria), who presented on his experiences as a vet and academic in South Africa, and Nathalia Brichet and Frida Hastrup (University of Copenhagen), who presented on the role of social sciences and their field work in Denmark in co-creating biosecurity measures in context. https://tinyurl.com/5n9464zm
