Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, plants and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

Brazil releases the São Paulo Declaration on One Health
“The São Paulo Declaration on One Health emerges as an academic, governmental, professional, and social call to collective action, highlighting the importance of adopting the One Health approach in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss, social vulnerability, and their negative consequences, in alignment with The São Paulo Declaration on Planetary Health…...The principal objective is to develop the National One Health Action Plan in line with the Quadripartite One Health Joint Plan of Action. Moreover, the committee seeks to coordinate with states and municipalities to guide interfederal and intersectoral measures and support the development of studies and research incorporating this approach.” See:

2025 One Health Guidelines: Navigating Cross-disciplinary Partnerships
Veterinary and human health professionals occupy integral roles in a One Health system by providing inclusive, equitable, and holistic health care for families and promoting positive social, economic, and environmental determinants of health. Veterinary and human healthcare teams can both benefit from the knowledge and support gained by greater collaboration. These Guidelines help veterinary practices navigate the intricacies of cross-disciplinary communication to better serve patients and families and present strategies for One Health case management that clearly define:

FAO to launch two new Global Hubs: the One Health Knowledge and Intelligence Hub, and the Sustainable Livestock Transformation Innovation Hub
And in 2026, FAO will host the first-ever Global Conference on One Health in Agrifood Systems to showcase how One Health connects animal, human, plant, soil, environmental health, food safety, and nutrition. African Union Digital One Health Platform is Endorsed at Africa Health Tech Summit
October 15, 2025
Improving health in Africa with data linked in an intelligent manner
The Digital One Health Community, a global network of over 800 digital and One Health professionals, advocated for the adoption of the African Union Digital One Health Platform during the Africa Health Tech Summit 2025 (#AHTS25). The network hailed the new decentralized African Union Platform as a "game changer" to prevent disease outbreaks. While considering data sovereignty and safety, the platform offers a tool for data integration and analytics across the continent. It supports the increasing demand for Health Intelligence Centres. Following the recent conference resolution promoting the adoption of the platform at the Africa Animal Welfare Conference 2025 in Yaounde Cameroon, the community urged all AU member states to adopt this groundbreaking tool. The platform will be officially launched by the African Union this year. As part of the engagement of the GIZ sponsored One Health Data Alliance Africa (OHDAA) project, the community supports exchange and capacity development on One Digital Health, including a One Health Analytics Programme. Mentoring and Skills Development Training (MSDT) - One Health
Hosted by the University of California - Davis and a consortium of institutions including the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), Iowa State University, and Meharry Medical College. MSDT-One Health is a professional development and mentoring program bridging clinical skills with toxicology knowledge and practice at the nexus of environmental toxic exposures and the health of humans and animals. The goal of this (primarily virtual) 1-year, national program is to build a cadre of early-career scientists and undergraduate students in STEM with knowledge and research skill sets suitable for transdisciplinary, multisectoral, transformative research in One Health. Learning objectives are achieved through a combination of workshops, field trips, attendance at a One Health Conference, assigned e-modules and case studies, grant writing workshops, and webinars delivered by expert scientists in the fields of toxicology and One Health. One Health was present in the 2024 UN General Assembly (UNGA79) Science Summit
September 10-27, 2024
New York, USA. The interconnected challenges of health inequities, climate change, and food security require urgent, coordinated action informed by science and innovation. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear a disproportionate burden of preventable diseases, exacerbated by gaps in healthcare access, digital disparities, and environmental degradation. The UNGA79 Science Summit emphasized leveraging interdisciplinary solutions to bridge these divides. UNGA79 Summit of the Future Pact Fails to include One Health - Raising our Collective One Health Voices
New York City. World leaders at the UNGA79 Summit of the Future were meeting and adopting a Pact for the Future in September 2024 simultaneous to the Eighth World One Health Congress (WOHC) in Cape Town, South Africa (September 20-23, 2024). When it became apparent that the Summit of the Future program barely included any One Health in discussions, on 21 September attendees at the WOHC collectively prepared and shared a message to the UN General Secretary, the Summit of the Future Actions Days and other UN contacts urging that One Health be fully embraced with specific suggestions of where it could be included in the draft Pact for the Future. https://tinyurl.com/3kfadrm5

Unfortunately, the call message arrived too late and the final Summit of the Future Pact failed to include the One Health way of thinking and decision making in proposed plans for the world's future.

Question to Ponder!
Was PANOFTOSA, the Pan American Center for Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Veterinary Public Health, one of the earliest One Health organizations?
PANOFTOSA was established in 1951 from an agreement between PAHO, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Brazil to support countries in the fight against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), an endemic animal disease at this time throughout the territory of South America. Although FMD was the origin of its creation, PANAFTOSA soon expanded its scope of activity to the areas of Zoonoses and Food Safety. Thanks to a multisectoral approach, the Center was a pioneer in the implementation of programs for the management of health risks under the concept of “One Health”, considering the interface between humans, animals and the environment. It played a fundamental role in the elimination of human rabies transmitted by dogs in most countries in the region and provided support to countries in the prevention of foodborne diseases and in the development of their national plans for curbing antimicrobial resistance. This scientific opinion by the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors (GCSA) was presented at a plenary session of the 2024 European Public Health Conference on 15 November, 2024 and again at a One Health Conference organised in Bucharest by the Romanian Academy on 21 November, 2024. It provides recommendations to support the successful implementation of EU policies deriving from a One Health approach. It focuses on the forms of management and governance that are best suited for encouraging collaboration across the different sectors that make up One Health whilst minimising any unintended consequences that might result from such a new approach.

Lancet comment calls for linking Planetary Health and Planetary Boundaries
July 26, 2025. Co-authored by leaders in Planetary Health and Planetary Boundaries, this new Lancet Comment calls for the systematic alignment of those two frameworks and for closer exchange with GeoHealth, EcoHealth, and One Health communities. The authors argue that safeguarding human health requires addressing Earth system destabilisation across all nine planetary boundaries, six of which are already transgressed. Four priorities for action are outlined: health risk assessments, justice-centred policies for vulnerable populations, true cost accounting, and integrated communication strategies. World Medical Association (WMA) and World Veterinary Association (WVA) sign One Health-focused Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
8 July, 2025. Washington, D.C. During the WVA General Assembly, a new MOU was signed between the WVA and WMA by WVA President Dr John de Jong, D.V.M. (right) and WMA Chair of Council Jack Resneck, Jr, MD, (left) reinforcing their shared commitment to One Health. Together, the two organizations are tackling global challenges like One Welfare & AMR, in alignment with the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) for a stronger future for human, animal & environmental health. “Section 1: Global Development Objectives - Enhance Focus on One Health…..The Parties will collaborate in the One Health concept, which is a unified approach to veterinary and human medicine [veterinarians and physicians] in order to improve Global Health. France for One Health
Created in 2022, France for One Health is a do-tank that promotes the creation of links between actors in animal health, plant health, environmental health and human health. It aims to inform and carry forward proposals to develop One Health in France and serves as an interface between public authorities, economic actors and civil society by being a place of exchange, a vector of awareness and a carrier of concrete actions. For three years France for One Health has led an event titled

The FAO Virtual Learning Centers One Health Knowledge Nexus -
Communities of Practice (CoPs)
Spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and powered by the Quadripartite, the One Health Knowledge Nexus is part of wider Quadripartite efforts on One Health, in particular the One Health Joint Plan of Action. It complements the activities of the OHHLEP advisory and creates opportunities to collaborate with other groups focused on collating, synthesizing, exploring, generating, interpreting, and sharing knowledge and evidence related to One Health. As interest in One Health grows, the expanding volume of related tools, knowledge and evidence can result in cognitive overload, hindering individuals’ ability to find relevant and actionable content that meets their needs. Addressing this challenge requires the development of efficient systems for sharing tailored information with the right audience at the right time to co-create solutions. One Health also actively promotes collective sharing across sectors, disciplines, groups in society, and geographies to bring in different perspectives and make use of the knowledge of many. To facilitate this, these Communities of Practice (CoPs) provide a space for individuals interested in One Health to connect within communities to share, generate, exchange, discuss, and refine knowledge and evidence according to their needs and contexts. The current CoPs are:
- Antimicrobial resistance laboratory innovators

1) SIRVERA – the Pan American Health Organization’s regional system for rabies surveillance and data sharing.

October 30, 2025 Online Event for ICT CoP MEMBERS-ONLY: The launch of the ICT Inventory for One Health. 13:00 – 14:00 CEST
This inventory is the main product of the ICT CoP that will be built with CoP member inputs and will remain as a resource for all countries. A Zoom link will be sent to all CoP members.

2025 North America One Health Health University Network (NAOHUN) Virtual Strategic Planning & Organizational Meeting
September 4-5, 2025
Hosted by the North Carolina State University Global One Health Academy with over 170 individuals participating online, this event connected institutions in the United States, Canada, and Mexico offering the opportunity to share and learn more about various academia-based One Health programs across the continent. NAOHUN was established in 2024 and has grown to include representatives from 87 universities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With input from participants, efforts will move forward in officially setting up this network for continued collaboration and integration across North America with the ultimate goal of linking together North American universities to advance One Health. 2025 EU BEACON One Health education COST action Launches Media Campaign

The EU BEACON One Health Education infrastructure now operates on two dedicated Ubuntu servers of exceptional performance, each with four terabytes of storage, thirty-two cores and one hundred twenty-eight gigabytes of memory. These two physical machines together form a powerful and resilient backbone sustaining all our digital environments. The total cost of this infrastructure is barely one hundred euros per month, yet it delivers computational capacity equivalent to that of large institutional systems that consume hundreds of times more resources. This is possible because the entire architecture is open source, efficiently configured and maintained with full control over every layer of operation.

One Health Ship Project in Corumbá, Brazil -
Extended Navigation for Intensive and Optimized [Disease] Surveillance
March, 2024. Through a partnership signed between the Secretariat of State of Mato Grosso do Sul, the Brazilian Navy and Fiocruz Minas (Oswaldo Cruz de Minas), the SHIP Project was launched for study and monitoring of the health of riverine populations of the Pantanal. It is conducting medical, dental, health education work, screening, sample collection and examinations, including genomic surveillance of the pathogens of the entire riverside population, not only of humans, but also of animals and environment.

One Health Enterprise Network (OHEN) Launches a Lunchtime Seminar Series: TESTBED Dorset
Dorset, England. TESTBED Dorset is an initiative that connects people, animals, plants, and ecosystems through a shared commitment to healthier landscapes and stronger public health. Its vision is to position Dorset’s nationally important landscapes as the UK’s first Living Science Park. OHEN is developing a Prospectus that Prospectus to showcase the potential for collaboration and innovation in public, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors in the Dorset region. The introductory seminar explored how TESTBED Dorset applies the principles of One Health and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) to drive meaningful, place-based change. Target audience is anyone interested in animal, plant, environmental, or public health, in harnessing natural and working landscapes to support research and innovation, in developing or testing solutions in real-world settings, and in building cross-sector partnerships to address shared One Health challenges.

The veterinarian’s role in food security -
World Veterinary Association (WVA) Global One Health Summit
Global leaders advocate for veterinarians as strategic leaders for food security and other One Health issues
July, 2021. Washington, DC. at the AVMA/WVA joint conference. "Food security is a foundation of health, peace, and dignity. It is our shared responsibility to protect and promote it. Veterinarians are the guardians of this foundation," said Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, director general of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH, formerly OIE)... The summit closed with an audience-interactive panel discussion with speakers touching on how to get more buy-in and investment in veterinarians’ roles in global food security as a key One Health issue. Illinois Governor signs Bill into law creating an
Illinois One Health Commission (ILOHC)
Springfield, Illinois (IL), USA. Illinois Senate Bill 291 establishes the
Illinois One Health Commission to aid in communication and collaboration between the doctors, veterinarians, and others on public health and safety when it comes to diseases that originate or mutate in animals. Commission members will include the IL Department of Public Health (IDPH) Director, the President of the University of Illinois, the Directors of six other state agencies, and the Director of Commerce and Economic Opportunity as an advisory, non-voting member. Welcoming new members and partnerships
The UK Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment (GAFE) and The Bill Gatton Foundation Grand Challenge Team recently established a One Health Initiative bringing together research, extension and instruction in One Health that will serve as a foundation for the planned, future UK One Health Center. The UK One Health Initiative, one of The Bill Gatton Foundation Grand Challenges, enables faculty, staff and students from various UK colleges and departments, along with state agencies, to identify and provide challenge solutions through education, research and extension. In Fall 2025, a graduate course “One Health in Action” will be offered in-person and online. Additionally, an introductory undergraduate course, as well as undergraduate and graduate certificates in One Health, are planned for 2026. Student-Led Mellennium Fellowship Project
One Health in Action: Combatting AMR
Monrovia, Liberia. Led by Carlton Mewaseh Kruah Jr., a Millennium Fellow and Campus Director from African Methodist Episcopal (AME) University in Liberia. The Millennium Fellowship is co-presented by the Millennium Campus Network (MCN) and United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI). It is also hosted on university campuses worldwide and is a separate initiative from the Millennium Leadership Program at the Atlantic Council. This AME initiative focused on raising awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promoting Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) using a One Health approach. Through research, education, and advocacy, the project highlighted the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in the fight against AMR.

A total of 49 wild animals were sampled……. A vulture and an owl were found to be carriers of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli strains. These strains belonged to the sequence type (ST) ST10 and ST155, which is associated with widespread antimicrobial resistance. Neither birds showed clinical signs of infection, but the study was unable to determine whether the animals had colonized E. coli in the wild, prior to arriving at the rehabilitation center, or at the center itself. However, genomic studies have shown that the genes for antibiotic resistance can easily transfer between E. coli clones and even other bacterial species. https://tinyurl.com/r42bpbxf

November 10-21, 2025 this 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will be the first time a COP event is held in an Amazonian city. This November 13-14 Satellite Meeting is co-sponsored by the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), the Brazilian Association of Collective Health (ABRASCO), and the One Health Working Group (OHWG) of the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA). Using phages to promote plant growth
International Agro@TecVerde Hybrid Seminar Series
Porto, Portugal. Hosted by the University of Porto School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) One Health Office. ICBAS's international seminars aim to promote the transfer of scientific knowledge and best practices among internationally renowned students and researchers from different backgrounds and scientific fields. In September, they began the Agro@TecVerde cycle which aims to increase international cooperation between institutions within the scope of the One Health approach which is the guiding principle of ICBAS's activities. The October 22 event was one among topics ranging from fish to water to saliva. Speaker: Prof. Ville-Friman, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Helsinki, Finland. Bacterial viruses—phages—are ubiquitous and shape the structure of natural bacterial communities. Phages can also be used to biologically control phytopathogenic bacteria in order to improve agricultural production and reduce crop losses due to plant diseases. This lecture reviewed recent findings on the different roles of phages in promoting plant growth and suppressing the notorious phytopathogenic bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum and how phage selection can be used as an evolutionary tool to control pathogen virulence through costly trade-offs in life history. https://tinyurl.com/5yhvm29u

Using Genomics for Disease Detection in Ex-Situ Conservation: A One Health Perspective

ALL IN for One Health: Uniting Efforts to Protect People, Animals, and the Environment
Organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society of the U.S. This session complemented a draft motion requesting IUCN to develop a One Health strategy and encouraging all IUCN members to recognize and elevate the profile of the One Health approach in their conservation work and to support its operationalization. One Health initially focused on zoonotic diseases but has evolved to include primary prevention, pollution, and non-communicable diseases where the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent. With the inclusion of One Health in IUCN’s 20-year vision and 4-year programme, we can inform IUCN’s One Health strategy. Ducit Blue Foundation is the non-governmental (NGO) arm of Ducit Blue Solutions. This 2nd AMR & One Health A+ Knowledge Exchange series was aimed at youth and One Health professionals. It was designed to build momentum toward the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance. From the opening statements to the closing remarks, one message resonated clearly: youth must not only be consulted but be equal partners and co-creators in the fight against AMR. One Planet, One Health: Together we Build Comprehensive and Sustainable Healthcare
4th Balkan One Health Network (BOHN) Regional Conference
Hosted by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, as well as the co-organizers of the Institute of Public Health of the R.S.Macedonia. A large number of scientific and research papers were presented. This conference demonstrated the importance of our regional BOHN network, as scientific and research work reaffirms the need for implementing a holistic approach of One Health in all scientific and professional fields. New members of the BOHN network were introduced namely "One Health-BG" from Bulgaria and "Interministerial Committee for One Health" from Kosovo. BOHN is now an official partner of the One Sustainable Health for All Conference in Lyon 2025.

Global Applications of the One Health Joint Risk Assessment Operational Tool (JRA OT)
Developed by the Tripartite, the Joint Risk Assessment Operational Tool proposes a facilitated approach toward a comprehensive and consensual risk assessment for zoonotic diseases and other threats at the human-animal-environment interface. Since 2018, 66 JRA OT workshops have been conducted and further implemented across various countries. This webinar showcased how select countries have successfully adapted and embedded the JRA framework into their national processes, highlighting the scenarios in which it has been effectively utilized. It included updates from Canada, Viet Nam, Nigeria, Zambia, Jordan, North Macedonia, the Eastern Mediterranean, Jordan, Western Balkans, North Macedonia, and Bhutan. See two examples of how Canada has used the JRA. Canada emphasized that it helped them quickly bring sectors together when an issue emerges because of the relationships formed in the JRA process. On the occasion of World Zoonoses Day 2025, Dr. Jane Sykes, the Regional WOAH Representative for the Americas, organised a webinar focusing on the need to address diseases such as leptospirosis under a ‘One Health’ approach. Dr. Sykes shared her expert perspective on the challenges and solutions for tackling leptospirosis in urban settings and highlighted the importance of integrating efforts across animal, human, and environmental health sectors. She emphasized that only a truly integrated approach can reduce the risk of outbreaks in today’s increasingly complex and interconnected urban environments. See also:

The International Symposium for One Health Research and Practice – From Vision to Collaboration and Action
Shenzhen, China. Organized by China's One Health Network, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen Third People's Hospital (Southern University of Science and Technology Second Affiliated Hospital), and the Centre for Environment and Population Health, Griffith University, Australia.
This event brought together a diverse group of global experts from human, animal, and ecosystem health. It concluded with the launch of the Pengcheng Declaration, which seeks to serve as a strategic catalyst for countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond to collaboratively exchange emerging health evidence, align standards, and share responsibilities—accelerating the translation of One Health from concept to coordinated, multisectoral public health actions. The AGenda included:
- Day 1: The ‘why, what and how of One Health’: Examining the challenges of One Health implementation in breaking the transmission cycle of infectious diseases.
- Day 2: Learnings from case studies and finding ways to foster and strengthen future international, national and local collaborations.
- Day 3 Exploring how new technology such as AI, and health economics can promote effective One Health implementation, as well as how funding bodies and communities of practice networks can help One Health initiatives to grow.

Belgium. Organized by the Belgian Federal Public (FPS) Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment. The objective was to assess the risk of zoonotic disease emergence in Belgium and their prevention in the light of socio-environmental drivers that impact our society. This workshop explored the link between the risk of zoonosis emergence and our agricultural practices, our choices of land use planning and urban planning (such as land artificialization or the greening of cities), our interactions with wildlife, our outdoor tourist activities or our consumption and travel patterns linked to globalization. The Mentoring and Skills Development Training Program in One Health (MSDT-One Health) is a special career development opportunity targeting early career scientists (those who earned their PhD or terminal medical degree within the last 10 years) and undergraduate students in STEM to participate in a year-long toxicology training and mentoring program to conduct transdisciplinary research at the intercept between toxicology and One Health.
