The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), previously referred to as a One Health Tripartite, formally became the One Health 'Quadripartite' as a Memorandum of Understanding has now been signed adding the UN Environment Program (UNEP). https://tinyurl.com/3b4pdmzr

At the 74th World Health Assembly (May, 2021) resolution WHA74.7 titled ‘‘Strengthening WHO preparedness for and response to health emergencies’’ was adopted requesting that Member States “build on and strengthen the existing cooperation among WHO, FAO, OIE and UNEP (Quadripartite) to develop options, for consideration by their respective governing bodies, including establishing a common strategy on One Health, including a joint work plan on One Health to improve prevention, monitoring, detection, control and containment of zoonotic disease outbreaks’’. The resulting DRAFT OH JPA contains a comprehensive overview of Theory of Change, Medium and Long-term goals and outlines plans for implementation of One Health at regional and national levels. https://tinyurl.com/2p8x7ne4

The World Health Organization is currently working with global stakeholders on a pandemic prevention and preparedness treaty. Just One Health is working with other professionals and organizations to support and develop the treaty—especially by emphasizing equity and primary prevention that recognizes the interplay of human, animal, and environmental health and well-being. Just One Health has drafted a letter in support of a treaty that is rooted in justice and invites you to voice your support by signing onto the letter. They are also collecting organization signatures, so please share with any individual or organization that may be interested. The WHO wants to hear from individuals and organizations. We live in an interconnected world: the health and well-being of the environment, animals, and humans are intertwined in ways that are becoming increasingly apparent. Tackling today’s greatest challenges—whether climate change, pandemics, or drug resistance—requires an approach that recognizes these relationships. As part of our growth, CDDEP is becoming the One Health Trust (OHT). The One Health Trust (OHT) uses research and stakeholder engagement to improve the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. OHT continues and builds on the work of the CDDEP, which for more than a decade has conducted vitally important research on major global health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases, pandemic preparedness and response, vaccines, medical oxygen shortages, and non-communicable diseases. CABI One Health, a new open access journal, due to be launched later this year as part of a new set of transdisciplinary One Health resources, is now open for submissions. One Health Cases will provide a growing database of peer-reviewed educational, practical cases, and will be an invaluable resource for students, teachers, academics, public stakeholders, and industry practitioners. A One Health Knowledge Bank will follow later this year and will be a hub of relevant knowledge, information and data, including journal articles, cases, book chapters, curated species datasheets, and an extensive collection of hard-to-find grey literature in a single searchable database. A new global entity should be created to focus on effective communication to promote One Health with the general public. Needed: A separate global entity focused on information-sharing and communication. Such a broader “process and promotional” answer could be to create an entity singularly mandated to focus on One Health science, information, and performance on a sustained and multidisciplinary basis. This body would exist outside technical entities such as WHO, FAO, or OIE, drawing on their expertise as appropriate.

Once again, our human impact on the environment is coming back to 'bite' us. Scientists have confirmed a link between drug-resistant fungi in the environment and in human lungs. Environmental mold can cause lung infections in people with vulnerable immune systems. Some of these molds have evolved drug resistance from agricultural exposures, making fungal infections more difficult to treat. https://tinyurl.com/2p8sua6k

The World Health Organization’s World Health Day on April 7th was focused on Our Planet, Our Health. The goal of this workshop, hosted by ISOHA, the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation, and the International Veterinary Students Association, was to raise awareness about the impact of the environment on human health, engage members, students and alumni with public health activities, encourage inter-professional collaboration, promote the One Health approach, and inform about the role of pharmacists on environmental concerns.

Resistance among high-impact fungal pathogens has increased in recent years; however, few drugs are available to treat the infections they cause. Using the One Health framework, to better understand factors influencing the rise in antifungal resistance and the proper treatment of fungal infections, CDC is leading a discussion with experts on how to address the increasing burden of Candida auris, Aspergillus fumigatus, and dermatophytes (a type of fungi that can cause superficial infections on skin, hair, and nails). April 4, 2022 Workshop
Launch of 'One Health' for the Future project hosted by Foraus, a grassroots think tank based in Switzerland. This initiative explored three major phenomena that the "One Health" approach aims at preventing and addressing: zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and food safety and security threats. What will our future look like if we maintain the status quo? Which scenarios are likely to happen if we do not adopt holistic policy approaches? Dr. Cheryl Stroud, Executive Director, One Health Commission, shared an overview of the full scope of One Health and the global One Health movement. Prof. Vinh-Kim Nguyen, Co-Director of the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, discussed ‘collapsology’ of health systems and how 'One Health' could help us avoid such collapse. The project set the foundations for a follow-up workshop with experts and practitioners at the Geneva Health Forum. Hosted by the Alliance for African Partnership. Discussions related to One Health have mostly been held within the academic fraternity with limited engagements of governments or evidence of effective intersectoral cooperation and action. Furthermore, the few One Health initiatives undertaken for disease prevention and control have had limited monitoring and evaluation of its health and food systems outcomes, making it challenging to effectively make a case to policy makers on the benefits of OH for promoting public health. There remain ongoing questions on what governance mechanism would best promote intersectoral cooperation and how best to operationalize the One Health approach, including scaling capacity-building for implementation in the Global South that already has a high burden of zoonotic diseases and has experienced large disease outbreaks in the last decade. The implementation of OH in the Global South is an important component of global health security. Effective implementation and monitoring of OH in the African region should also be prioritised by both resource-constrained and resource-rich nations. https://bit.ly/3usJFIo
