The One Health Commission (OHC) believes that One Health ‘can’ become the default way of doing business at all levels of academia, research, government, policy and industry when individuals and groups from around the world work together in organized team efforts. In keeping with its mission, vision and goals, the OHC identifies gaps where implementation of One Health thinking and acting could have a powerful positive impact, saving lives, both animal and human, and improving ecosystem health for all living creatures. We live in an interconnected world: the health and well-being of the environment, animals, and humans are intertwined in ways that are becoming increasingly apparent. Tackling today’s greatest challenges—whether climate change, pandemics, or drug resistance—requires an approach that recognizes these relationships. As part of our growth, CDDEP is becoming the One Health Trust (OHT). The One Health Trust (OHT) uses research and stakeholder engagement to improve the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. OHT continues and builds on the work of the CDDEP, which for more than a decade has conducted vitally important research on major global health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases, pandemic preparedness and response, vaccines, medical oxygen shortages, and non-communicable diseases. OHT’s work now expands to take on issues related to climate change, biodiversity protection, and the effect of changing human diets on the planet. https://bit.ly/3qBo13I

CABI One Health, a new open access journal, due to be launched later this year as part of a new set of transdisciplinary One Health resources, is now open for submissions. One Health Cases will provide a growing database of peer-reviewed educational, practical cases, and will be an invaluable resource for students, teachers, academics, public stakeholders, and industry practitioners. A One Health Knowledge Bank will follow later this year and will be a hub of relevant knowledge, information and data, including journal articles, cases, book chapters, curated species datasheets, and an extensive collection of hard-to-find grey literature in a single searchable database. CABI issued an open call in December 2021 for editorial board members for the One Health resources. The full list of editors can be seen here. https://bit.ly/3NoxIMA

A new global entity should be created to focus on effective communication to promote One Health with the general public. Needed: A separate global entity focused on information-sharing and communication. Such a broader “process and promotional” answer could be to create an entity singularly mandated to focus on One Health science, information, and performance on a sustained and multidisciplinary basis. This body would exist outside technical entities such as WHO, FAO, or OIE, drawing on their expertise as appropriate.

Editorial for the inaugural ISOHA Journal
(see below in student section)
By Cheryl Stroud, DVM, PhD, Executive Director, One Health Commission
“We hear a lot today about training the next generation of scientists and global citizens. It’s become almost a ‘buzz’ word. But for me, seeing students all over the world embracing and working to further One Health, seeing young people develop their career paths with One Health thinking, gives me a peek into the future. I see a growing critical mass of young professionals who will, quite literally, change the world as they implement One Health …….Many of you have heard me refer to One Health as a ‘Ray of Hope for the Future’. [You] students intensify that ray of light and hope. Congratulations to each of you for your leadership for One Health. As you bring all professions to One Health thinking, you are, in fact, the next generation of HOPE.” https://tinyurl.com/fc93u6bk

Social sciences are essential to understanding and addressing the root causes of disease and determinants of community health. Without an understanding of how sociological, cultural, economic, demographic, historical, linguistic, geographic, political, and other social dimensions contribute to health, society will be limited in achieving it for all. Social science disciplines are critical to making One Health the default way of doing business at all levels of research, academia, policy, and government. Neglected One Health Issues

One Health and the environment
Once again, our human impact on the environment is coming back to 'bite' us. Scientists have confirmed a link between drug-resistant fungi in the environment and in human lungs. Environmental mold can cause lung infections in people with vulnerable immune systems. Some of these molds have evolved drug resistance from agricultural exposures, making fungal infections more difficult to treat. https://tinyurl.com/2p8sua6k

Did you know that antifungal resistance is a major global health threat? Resistance among high-impact fungal pathogens has increased in recent years; however, few drugs are available to treat the infections they cause. Using the One Health framework, to better understand factors influencing the rise in antifungal resistance and the proper treatment of fungal infections, CDC is leading a discussion with experts on how to address the increasing burden of Candida auris, Aspergillus fumigatus, and dermatophytes (a type of fungi that can cause superficial infections on skin, hair, and nails). Join in to hear from experts who are working to learn about antifungal resistance, its impact on public health, and the actions needed to address the spread. https://tinyurl.com/4a6y7hjp

Launch of 'One Health' for the Future project hosted by Foraus, a grassroots think tank based in Switzerland. This initiative explored three major phenomena that the "One Health" approach aims at preventing and addressing: zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and food safety and security threats. What will our future look like if we maintain the status quo? Which scenarios are likely to happen if we do not adopt holistic policy approaches? Dr. Cheryl Stroud, Executive Director, One Health Commission, shared an overview of the full scope of One Health and the global One Health movement. Prof. Vinh-Kim Nguyen, Co-Director of the Global Health Centre at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, discussed ‘collapsology’ of health systems and how 'One Health' could help us avoid such collapse. The project set the foundations for a follow-up workshop with experts and practitioners at the Geneva Health Forum. The final output from the whole process will be presented in November at the Science Summit organised in Berlin by the organisation Falling Walls. Recording available. https://bit.ly/37HL3jc

March 30, 2022
Hosted by the Alliance for African Partnership. Discussions related to One Health have mostly been held within the academic fraternity with limited engagements of governments or evidence of effective intersectoral cooperation and action. Furthermore, the few One Health initiatives undertaken for disease prevention and control have had limited monitoring and evaluation of its health and food systems outcomes, making it challenging to effectively make a case to policy makers on the benefits of OH for promoting public health. There remain ongoing questions on what governance mechanism would best promote intersectoral cooperation and how best to operationalize the One Health approach, including scaling capacity-building for implementation in the Global South that already has a high burden of zoonotic diseases and has experienced large disease outbreaks in the last decade. The implementation of OH in the Global South is an important component of global health security. Effective implementation and monitoring of OH in the African region should also be prioritised by both resource-constrained and resource-rich nations. https://bit.ly/3usJFIo

Hosted by Edward Ingebretsen of Georgetown University and Washington, DC History & Culture. This presentation offers an overview of the initial stirrings (Aristotle, Darwin, Bentham) of advocacy for non-human animals. What do we make of the ethical complications by which one animal (the doggy) we invite into our homes and buy holiday gifts for, while the arguably smarter animal, the pig, goes on the table at that same holiday. A brief look at how non-human animals serve as entertainment, food, and clothing for human animal comfort and appetites; Some we hate, some we love, Some we eat (Herzog). What's that all about, anyway?

Presented on YouTube by the Planetary Health Alliance in cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund and the Harvard University Center for the Environment. We find ourselves actors in one of history’s greatest dramas—a lone species with an exceptional talent for bending the natural world toward our will, spinning through space on a stunning but fragile planet. We are waking up to planetary health - the understanding that our disruption of Nature is threatening not just other species but also ourselves. Many of the solutions are in front of us. Do we have the will to implement them in time?
