Honor the 350,000 American servicewomen of WWII at Our War Too: Women in Service, a temporary exhibition from The National WWII Museum. Featuring 200+ artifacts, immersive projections, and narrative films, the exhibit highlights their often-overlooked contributions—including the trailblazing 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the all-Black, all-female unit featured in the recent Netflix film "The Six Triple Eight."

Volunteer Open House: Make a Difference

at the California Museum

April 12, 2025 | 10 am - 2 pm

The California Museum invites prospective volunteers to attend the Volunteer Open House on Saturday, April 12. This free, informational event offers prospective volunteers an overview of our program and requirements, as well as the opportunity to meet staff, enjoy complimentary refreshments, tour current exhibits and start training to be a volunteer.

Join us for an open house from 10 - 11 am and an optional new volunteer orientation from 11 am - 2 pm. Open to adults and to youths age16-17 with parental consent. Register in advance by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11.

Book Talk with Author Erin Lee Gafill & Private Governor's Mansion Tour

Celebrate World Art Day at this special FREE event for California Museum members and their guests! Featuring:

Presentation about artist Jane Gallatin Powers
Book signing
Guided Governor’s Mansion tour
Light refreshments

Erin Lee Gafill, author of Jane Gallatin Powers: A California Modernist and Jane’s great-great-granddaughter, will present on Jane’s life as a pioneering woman artist. Jane grew up in the now-Governor's Mansion, a home built in 1877 for her father, Albert Gallatin. Later she became an accomplished modernist painter and helped establish Carmel-by-the-Sea as a women’s arts community.

Following the presentation, Erin will sign books and guests may join a guided tour of the Mansion, which has been closed to the public since its 2014 renovation.

On Saturday, March 29, California Museum members had the unique opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Sacramento’s history-making women with a special members-only walking tour through the streets of Sacramento! Led by California Museum's Sean Manwaring, author of "Sacramento's Newton Booth & Poverty Ridge," guests uncovered how artists, activists, journalists, and entrepreneurs transformed the capital region with their determination and talent.

Steve Sasaki is the Docent on Duty in "Uprooted"

Steve Sasaki, an expert docent at the Museum, would love to share his knowledge with you! Join him in “Uprooted: An American Story ” to hear about his family’s experiences of incarceration during World War II. Steve offers a Q&A as you pass through, or a full guided exhibit tour on topics such as coming to America, life in the incarceration camps, and returning home after WWII. Learn more here.
