Help Us Help Your Community

The NC Counts Coalition and HandsOn Northwest North Carolina invites you to take a quick survey to help ensure everyone in our community is counted. Your input will strengthen outreach and help secure funding and resources ahead of the 2030 Census.

Things to Keep Your Eye On

SAVE America Act

The SAVE America Act represents a significant shift in federal voter regulation. This recently passed the house, and if enacted, it could create new barriers to voter registration that particularly impact nonprofit civic engagement efforts and the communities they work with. Organizations focused on civic participation may need to reassess strategies for voter outreach and consider legal and advocacy responses.

Anti-DEI System for Award Management

Potential updates to SAM, based on direction from the Attorney General, could introduce new compliance certifications related to DEI policies for organizations receiving federal funds. The rules are still developing, but nonprofits that rely on federal funding should monitor updates and prepare for possible adjustments to compliance processes. Public comment is currently open.

Johnson Amendment Litigation

Current judicial review of the Johnson Amendment could affect how it is interpreted and enforced, particularly for houses of worship. A pending federal court case involving churches and the IRS may reshape the scope of permissible political speech for some 501(c)(3) organizations. Nonprofits should continue to follow existing nonpartisan rules but monitor developments closely, as changes could affect the sector’s long-standing separation from partisan campaign activity.
