One Shocker Family

December 2022

Dear Parents and Families,

It seems only a few weeks ago that we were welcoming students to campus to begin the fall semester, so I am amazed that we have navigated yet another successful fall semester and winter break is already upon us.

Classes are wrapping up next week, and finals are soon approaching. I understand that this may be a stressful, anxiety-inducing period for many. The holidays, while a joyful time for many, can also be a difficult and isolating season for others. Wichita State is here to support our community and offers various mental well-being resources and support. Please remember that our students are never alone and there is always someone to turn to for help and guidance. You can access all resources on our CARE Team page.

As our students prepare to return home, I hope they will join with you in celebrating your family’s traditions and sharing time with friends. I am looking forward to decorating my house, sitting in front of a fire, spending time with family, and simply enjoying conversations with the special people in our lives. I hope you and yours will also enjoy sharing wonderful times with family and friends.

As always, it has been a joy to work with you and our students. Seeing students learn and grow on campus makes our work gratifying and worthwhile.

I wish each and every one of you a joyous holiday season, and I look forward to starting anew in 2023.

With Shocker Pride,

Alicia A. Martinez Newell

Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs

Campus Housing Reminders

Housing and Residence Life would like to send out a few reminders regarding the end of the semester:

  • 24-Hour Quiet Hours will begin on Friday night, 12/09/2022 at 9:00pm, and will not end until Friday, 12/16/2022, at 12:00pm (noon).
  • You do NOT have to fully move-out of your room for this break if you are returning to university housing for the spring semester. Simply be sure to take any/all items with you that you will need during this break if you are not continuing to stay on campus, and follow any instructions provided by your building Residence Life staff regarding how to leave your room (items unplugged, heat set to 65 degrees, etc).
  • Students planning to reside for any length of time on campus over the winter break (12/16/2022 - 01/12/2023) MUST fill out the Break Housing Request Form for the Winter Intersession, which is now available through the housing portal via myWSU, under the "Manage My Assignments" tab. Requests for break housing must be completed no later than 5:00pm, Wednesday, 12/07/2022. There is no cost to reside on campus over this break if you are returning to university housing for the spring semester.
  • If you are NOT returning to live on campus for the spring semester, you are NOT permitted to reside on campus over winter break, and will be required to vacate by 12:00pm (noon) on Friday, 12/16/2022. If you are seeking a late check-out due to graduation or other extenuating circumstance, you may complete this form; however, your request may or may not be granted. If granted, you will be billed the daily break housing fee for the dates you stay.
  • On this short form you will indicate the start and end dates you plan to be on campus (if you plan to come back and forth to campus, please leave the dates defaulted to start the end of the break period).
  • PLEASE NOTE: Building card access will be removed after the end of the fall semester on 12/16/2022, and only those students who have notified HRL by filling out this form will retain their building access. Card access will not resume regularly until 01/13/2023 when the residence halls reopen for the spring semester through the housing contract.
  • Failure to complete this form by the deadline date mentioned above, and requesting access at a later date may result in a one-time lock out charge of $10.00 in order for door access to be reactivated.
  • Shocker Dining will be closed after lunch on Friday, December 16, 2022, and will reopen for the spring 2023 semester on Monday evening January 16, 2023, for dinner. While any fall semester dining dollars will still be available for utilization during this timeframe; students planning on staying over the winter break may opt into purchasing one or both of the two Break Meal Bundles available from Chartwells. We know not every student will be on campus for the whole break, so you may choose to purchase one, both, or neither of these options. Meal Bundle 1 is available from 12/16/2022 - 12/31/2022; Meal Bundle 2 is available from 01/01/2023 - 01/16/2023. Each bundle will include 31 meals (1 entree, 1 fruit, 1 chip, 1 bottled beverage), and will cost $279.00, which will be added to your student account. Meals will be available for pick up at the Groundhouse
  • If you are leaving campus for the winter break, be sure you have retrieved any mail or packages from the front desk of your building. Unclaimed mail/packages received during the fall semester will be returned to sender over the winter break.
  • Athletic events will continue over the winter break; therefore, if you are leaving campus but leaving your vehicle at WSU, be sure you are not parked in any of the reserved lots identified on this map. Your vehicle may be heavily ticketed and/or towed at your expense over this break if left in one of those reserved parking lots.

Campus Dining

End of semester dining deals are here! Starbucks in the RSC has buy one, get one pound of coffee free. Cargill Café and Groundhouse have buy 9 drinks, get the 10th one free loyalty cards. Reminder that dining and shocker dollars can be used to purchase mugs, coffee, merchandise, packaged merchandise and more!

Dining dollars will roll over into the spring semester, but Shocker bonus dollars will expire on the last day of classes. Check dining, shocker, or shocker bonus balances on your receipt after making a purchase from any campus dining location listed at dineoncampus.com/wsudining.

Have a student low on dining dollars? Shocker dollars are always available to purchase at dineoncampus.com/wsudining. The best part about shocker dollars is they won’t expire as long as your student remains at Wichita State. Follow @wsudining on Instagram and Facebook to stay in the know about pop up deals, dining hours, and special events.
