Halacha Notes from Rabbi Topp

Taanit Esther/Megillah:

The fast should preferably be broken only after hearing Megillah reading on Thursday evening. However, if you will not hear Megillah until later in the evening, eating light snacks after nightfall (at 7:28pm) would be permissible. A full meal should not be eaten until after one hears the Megillah.

Mishloach Manot:

The mitzvah is accomplished by sending two ready-made food items (or one food and one beverage) to one friend. Both foods may have the same beracha. Even if you are participating in the Shul Mishloach manot, you should personally deliver a package to at least one person.

Matanot L’evyonim:

The Mitvzah is fulfilled by giving tzedakah to two poor people on the day of Purim - please see letter below from Rabbi Topp.

Purim Seudah:

With Purim being Erev Shabbat, we eat the Purim Seudah early to ensure that we have an appetite when we enjoy our Shabbat dinner. The meal should be eaten in the morning or at the very least, the meal should begin prior to chatzot (midday, 1:02pm) and conclude prior to 4:01pm (“samuch l’mincha”).

Matanot Levyonim - Letter from the Rabbi

Dear Beth Jacob Family,

One of the core elements of every Jewish holiday is remembering those in need and ensuring they are provided for (Rambam, Laws of Yom Tov 6:18). This obligation carries special significance on Purim, when our salvation was clinched through unity—both in prayer and in battle. To highlight this theme, Esther and Mordechai established the mitzvah of Matanot Levyonim, gifts to the poor. The Rambam even teaches (Laws of Megillah 2:17) that one should spend more on Matanot Levyonim than on Mishloach Manot.

This mitzvah is fulfilled by giving tzedakah to two poor people on Purim day. Alternatively, you can appoint me as your agent to distribute these funds on your behalf. I work with organizations in LA and Israel to ensure that thousands of dollars are distributed on Purim directly to those in need. 100 cents on the dollar goes to the needy.

Click here to make your contribution and fulfill this impactful mitzvah. Your generosity is deeply appreciated and will make a big difference to those who rely on our support.

Purim Sameach!
