July 17, 2024, started out like any other day. Rob Halley headed out on his delivery route transporting steel pipe to job sites. It was just another workday. The kind you don’t really think twice about.

Until, in a single moment, everything changed.

While a forklift operator was unloading a 2,000-pound steel pipe from Rob’s truck, something went terribly wrong.

The massive pipe fell, landing directly on top of Rob. Severely injured, Rob somehow remained conscious in those first moments. Through the shock and pain, one thought came to him immediately,

“I need to call Yasmin.”

With the help of the forklift operator, Rob managed to make the call to his wife to let her know there had been an accident and his injuries were critical. He wasn’t sure if this was the last time they would ever hear each other’s voices.

Moments after that call, Rob lost consciousness.

In an instant, Yasmin’s world was turned upside down. As she jumped in her car, a fear sat heavy in her chest; their 12-year-old daughter was at home, waiting, not yet knowing how drastically life had just changed.

From Toronto to the Hamilton General Hospital, Yasmin made the long trip filled with fear and unanswered questions. Every minute felt endless. She didn’t know Rob’s condition, or if he would still be alive.

When she arrived at the hospital, she was given a private room and told she was unable to see Rob because he had a team of doctors trying to revive him.

The injuries were devastating: two broken toes, two broken legs, a shattered pelvis, ribs broken in multiple places, both lungs collapsed, two fractured vertebrae, a broken collarbone, along with dangerous internal bleeding.

All she could do was wait.

Those hours stretched longer than she thought possible. In those quiet moments, she held onto hope, and to a quiet, steady faith that helped her keep going when nothing else felt certain.

Finally, Rob was moved into the ICU, allowing Yasmin to see him at last. He was on life support and in a medically induced coma. His blood pressure was high and his oxygen was low. She sat at his bedside, thanking God that he was still alive.

Robert remained in a coma for the next few days, only undergoing surgery when it was finally safe to do so. During that time, Yasmin relied on the support of her family to keep her strong, so she could be strong for her husband.

Defying the odds, Rob regained consciousness, and with it came an unshakable resolve to fight, to recover, and to be there for his family. But the journey ahead would be long and challenging. Rob needed Yasmin, and she needed support as well. That’s when she found The Mark Preece Family House.

From the moment she arrived, Yasmin remembers she was surrounded by kindness. She arrived looking for a place to rest, but what she found was something much deeper, a true sense of community. Other families were there, facing their own medical crises, sharing quiet conversations, understanding looks, and moments of strength that can only come from people walking a similar path.

It was a place where she didn’t feel alone.

The House gave her space not only to rest, but to care for Rob in the ways only she could. Yasmin spent time in the kitchen preparing meals for him, something she loved doing. And as Rob worked through rehab, those home-cooked meals helped him regain his strength and gave him comfort during some of his hardest days.

For nearly a month, Rob remained in at the hospital in Hamilton, fighting to regain his strength before he was finally well enough to be transferred to a hospital closer to home.

Looking back, Yasmin and Rob will tell you, “We don’t know how we would have made it through without The Mark Preece Family House.”

The House gave Yasmin strength, a sense of community, and the ability to support her husband during the most difficult time of their lives. Because of that support, Rob was able to overcome the unimaginable. Today, Rob is not only walking and doing well-he’s back at work.

To celebrate this miracle, Yasmin and Rob have committed to making a donation to The Mark Preece Family House every year on their birthdays hoping to ensure that other families facing crisis will have the same support when they need it most.

When the unthinkable happens, families shouldn’t have to face it alone. Your gift today can provide comfort, strength, and a place to stay for someone like Yasmin, right when they need it most. Please consider making a donation today and be the reason a family finds hope in their darkest moment.
