Staying Connected While we continue working from home, the OWOW Center has created a fun and innovative way to stay connected and engaged. We proudly bring to you: TomTalks! TomTalks are a series of educational videos to help us all feel a bit more connected during this very disconnected time. Every couple weeks Tom Cech will sit down with experts, some new faces and some you may recognize, to discuss and dissect the many facets of water in Colorado and around the world. So top off your water bottle and join us for an episode of TomTalks ! We have also taken this time as an opportunity to “re-brand”! Check out our new and improved social media accounts.

Auraria Campus Update As of March 16, all classes on the Auraria Campus were moved online in order to protect members of the campus community from COVID-19. Most summer classes have also been moved online, and only essential employees are currently allowed on the campus. To ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff, the Auraria Campus is planning to adopt a teaching and learning model that supports both on-campus and online classes for the fall 2020 semester. Social distancing protocols projected for Denver this fall indicate that we will not be able to hold the same number of in-person courses on campus. Each institution, in collaboration with AHEC, will make every effort to safely accommodate the many classes that require a face-to-face learning experience while also greatly expanding and enhancing their online offering s. Global Pandemic-- Global Water Issue The COVID-19 pandemic is bringing to light many unforeseen consequences, one being a major global water crisis. Insufficient water for washing is likely to worsen the corona virus in the poorest nations. Without a treatment or a vaccine, the primary advice to prevent the spread of the coronavirus is regular hand-washing and good hygiene. But this is out of reach for millions of Ethiopians living without sustainable access to clean water, laying bare the critical link between water and public health. Improving access to water, sanitation, and hygiene systems could bring down the overall global disease burden by 9 percent and reduce the number of deaths to disease by more than 6 percent. Diving With a Purpose For many, being in water is the one place where their injuries do not bother them. So WAVES, Wounder American Veterans Experience was created. The Southern California-based nonprofit helps former military members recover from service-connected injuries. The National Park Service give WAVES underwater “missions”, such as helping the park Service map a now submerged aggregate plant that was instrumental in building the Hoover Dam in Lake Mead.
