A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

“Let us remember… one child and one teacher can change the world.” Malala Yousafzai

What do you remember about the first day of school? When I was growing up, the first day of school meant a new outfit, anxiety about what friends might be in my class, getting to know a new teacher, and have that teacher get to know me.

At IVYP, our first day of school meant 10 new babies in our infant rooms. It meant some tears as some of our preschoolers separated from parents. It means 80 students at El Camino elementary school and 130 students at Isla Vista Elementary school will be spending their afternoons with us – learning about club choice and mindfulness, as well as homework help and library time.

The first day of school means new beginnings, new opportunities, a clean slate. It’s when we set goals for the year, full of optimism and possibility. So, as we move out of summer and into fall, I wish you and your families a new school year full of promise.

United Way Day of Caring

United Day of Caring is almost here and our projects are in need of volunteers! On September 14 United Way will be holding it's 28th annual Day of Caring event. We are looking for 14 volunteers to spend their morning with us, at our Children's Center from 9-12. We need help beautifying our break room and sanitizing our classrooms. After we are done we will celebrate with a BBQ hosted by the United Way!

Montecito Bank and Trust Diaper Drive

During the month of September Santa Barbra branches of Montecito Bank and Trust will be collecting diapers for IVYP programs. Diapers collected will go to our Family Resource Center to be able to offer diapers to families in crisis who need the support of our emergency food and basic needs pantry. New, unopened diapers of any size will be gladly accepted. Simply visit any MBT branch in the Santa Barbara area to donate. Thank you to Montecito Bank and Trust for supporting children and families in need in the Goleta Valley!

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our monthly food distribution on the first Thursday of every month. This month we are highlighting summer squash. Summer squash is a serious nutritional power-packed veggie. Yellow squash is also rich in manganese. This mineral helps to boost bone strength and helps the body’s ability to process fats and carbohydrates. We love this recipe because it's easy, affordable, and oh so delicious!
