Africa Climate Week Showcases Past Winner
Last month at Africa Climate Week in Accra, Ghana, regional climate solutions were featured at the venue, including our past winner Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative

"We use our local raw material, which is bamboo, to manufacture bicycles," said Bernice Dapaah, CEO & Founder of Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative.

The initiative, which won our climate action award in 2013, addresses climate change, poverty, rural-urban migration and youth unemployment by creating jobs for young people, especially women, through the building of high quality bamboo bicycles. Compared to the production of traditional metal bicycles, bamboo bikes require less electricity and no hazardous chemicals. Not only are the bikes light and stable, they can handle rough terrain and can carry large farm loads and passengers.
