This Rhode Island shelf clock, crafted by David Williams of Newport in 1815, is a notable example of the Massachusetts shelf clock tradition. This style is primarily associated with Boston, particularly the Willard family of Roxbury. Refined proportions and elegant craftsmanship characterize it. Although produced outside Massachusetts, these clocks retain their designation due to Willard's influence on their design.
This Newport-made timepiece showcases premium materials, including mahogany veneers, maple string inlays, and New England white pine as a secondary wood. The case reflects early American design with flared French feet, a scrolled drop apron, cross-banded mahogany veneer, and intricate inlay patterns that enhance its aesthetic appeal. The bonnet features a classic New England-style fretwork pattern, supporting a single brass urn-shaped finial. The arched glazed hood door displays a beautifully painted iron dial signed "David Williams / New Port." The dial, adorned with intricate gilt spandrels and a central medallion, was likely painted by the Boston-based firm Nolen & Curtis, known for supplying dials for shelf clocks of this era.
The clock includes a high-quality brass movement that is weight-driven and designed to run for eight days when fully wound. While David Williams is best known for his tall case and wall clocks, his rare shelf clocks make this an exceptional collector's piece.
David Williams was born in Rochester, Massachusetts, on March 29, 1769, and was a Quaker. Although it is unclear who trained David as a clockmaker, it is believed that he was working in Newport by 1800. His shop was located at the corner of Duke and Queen Streets. In 1811, he relocated his shop to the north side of Parade, ten doors down from his previous location. In 1818, he moved again to 56 Broad Street. Throughout this period, he likely had a retail outlet in Providence. He was one of, if not the most prolific clockmakers in Rhode Island. David Williams died in Newport on June 29, 1823, at 54.
