Christie's Reflections

The last year here at OneSource Center has been a bittersweet one.

We’ve seen several beloved members of our staff retire and move on to new life chapters. These leaders have been instrumental in growing OneSource Center, building warm, lasting, productive relationships with our members, volunteers and board and have created our upbeat culture of mutual support, grace and friendship.

As CEO, I’m keenly aware of the importance of not just hiring the right new employees who fit our culture and find passion in our mission, but once we find them, keeping them nurtured with ongoing coaching and encouragement along with plenty of opportunities for development and growth. I’ve observed that for true nonprofit leaders, it’s these things that inspire them to keep doing good, even when the going gets tough.

Anecdotally, we all know that developing talent within our organizations is one of the great minimizers of turnover as it provides a path for advancement and creates a strong culture of leadership. For this reason, OneSource is delighted to report that we have the honor of incorporating two of The Nonprofit Leadership Institute of Greater Cincinnati programs —ADVANCE and EXCEL— into OneSource Center programming.

If you are not familiar with these programs, explore here what they offer your leaders and your agency as a whole. Both programs are currently accepting your up-and-coming nonprofit leaders for the Fall 2024 program starts. And look for a new website and other changes coming soon!

Leadership development is a smart investment in your agency and we look forward to sharing success stories of ADVANCE and EXCEL graduates in the weeks and months to come. I think you’ll be inspired.

With Gratitude,

Christie

LEARNING, LEADERSHIP & PERSONAL GROWTH

NONPROFIT CEO'S:

Develop, Reward & Retain Your Top Leaders!

The EXCEL program is a nine-month leadership development and skills training program via The Nonprofit Leadership Institute of Greater Cincinnati (NILGC) for nonprofit executive directors and those reporting directly to them. This program is designed to nurture the capabilities of those individuals leading or preparing to lead nonprofit organizations in our region.

EXCEL program leaders Dave Wallace and Judy Beaudry are champions of this program, having led many talented Executive Directors through the programs.

Dave explains the value of EXCEL to your nonprofit organization this way:

"In our volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, it is critical that nonprofit agencies equip their employees with the skills and abilities necessary to navigate this challenging environment. Through EXCEL's unique blend of classroom sessions, individual coaching, and peer group learning, participants in the program learn not only how to be excellent leaders, but also how to create great organizations."

There are still spots available for the EXCEL & ADVANCE 2024 Fall Cohorts so don't delay enrolling your top leadership talent!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: JOURNEY SERVICES

It's Pride Month, a sunny time of the year to support and honor the rights of those in intersectional communities, from minority and disability, to LGBTQ+. However, OneSource Member Journey Services Counseling doesn't wait for the month of June to advocate for these communities...they do it every single day.

Journey Services' mission is to help people navigate challenging journeys regarding mental health, social justice, equity and inclusion. Margaret Pennington, Journey Services Co-Director of Mental Health Services, works with about 25 therapists a year who require supervision while they obtain their clinical counselor license. In her work, she emphasizes trauma-informed, culturally-relevant and social justice and LGBTQ+ affirming therapy to help increase the pool of mental health care providers who are prepared to counsel underserved populations.

To put the regional need for qualified mental health professionals in perspective, Ohio has a significant shortage of mental health providers with only 140 per 100,000, meeting only 30.9% of the need. In order to adequately address mental health challenges in the state, Ohio needs an additional 241 providers per 100,000 people. There is much work to do to attract and train these heroes and Margaret is taking this challenge head on.

Margaret and her husband Dr. Paul Pennington, Journey Services' Co-Director of Social Justice & Nonprofit Services, collaborate year-round with nonprofit leaders to develop mental health workshops, support groups, and one-on-one counseling to ensure the mental health resilience of activists and service providers serving minority, disability, and LGBTQ+ communities.

According to Paul:

"These folks give their hearts and souls to fight for equitable acceptance in the community as well as equitable access to housing, education, employment, healthcare, and nutrition, often while experiencing various levels of discrimination and rejection themselves. We are particularly concerned about providing free or low-cost mental health care tailored to the unique needs of these frontline, grassroots activists and service providers."

Thank you Paul and Margaret for your important work on behalf of those who serve and those in need. We are honored to have you as a OneSource Center member.
