Volunteer Spotlight - Larry Evans
Our last section leader profile of the year is Bass section leader, Larry Evans, who says his earliest memories were of music.  He recalls gathering around the piano at Christmas time while his mother played and he, his siblings, and his "tone deaf father" sang carols.  He performed his first solo in church at age 6 or 7.  He sang 'Fairest Lord Jesus', a favorite of his Baptist upbringing. He continued to sing in choirs and loved music class in elementary school.  He played clarinet and saxophone in high school, sang in concert choirs and played in a rock band covering mostly soul music standards by Otis Redding, James Brown, Wilson Pickett and others.  Larry undertook music performance in college, and as he says, "Here I am 40 years later."  We are so fortunate to have Larry's leadership in the bass section.  His years as a professional singer are a real asset to both the Rockbridge Choral Society and the Rockbridge Chamber Singers.  He is also a board member of the Friends of the Rockbridge Choral Society.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of the jobs that our volunteers do, please check in with the Friend's Executive Director, Melanie Griffis-Hooper.  Send her an email at admin@rcs.org to learn how you can use your non-vocal talents to help, or catch Melanie at one of our Monday night rehearsals, and thanks!

Do uble Trouble...
Just in time for Hall oween, RCS Artistic Director, William McCorkle, joins soprano, Anne Wick, for a song program of magic and mystery to get us in the mood for the season of goblins and spooks!  Anne is well known in the Shenandoah Valley for her singing in recital, oratorio, and music theatre.  She is on the voice faculty of Mary Baldwin University and James Madison University.  Selections will include works from opera (Purcell, Dvorak, Humperdinck), art song (Poldowski, Wolf), music theatre and the movies.  Come and hear renditions from C  hicago, South Pacific, The Secret Garden, Ghost the Musical, Into the Woods, Jekyll & Hyde and more.  Bring your friends to the Lexington Presbyterian Church at 7 PM on October 30 for the musical magic!
One Youth Thing
Lexington's Grace Episcopal Church has a new music director/ organist - Martha Burford.  Martha has composed piece for mass choir titled "Are We Listening?" which will have its debut performance on October 27 at the Virginia Music Teachers Association Conference in Lynchburg, VA.  And our Rockbridge Youth Chorale, including children's choir members, grades 2 to 5, will be there to sing the premier along with the Richmond Women's Chorus.  Ms. Burford has been to a recent RYC rehearsal to work with chorus director Lacey Lynch and the youth choirs and to teach members to play some of the instruments which will be used during the performance.  The RYC will sing their own set at the concert and then join the Women's Chorus for the mass choir performance.  Find conference, concert and ticket information  here . We are so excited that our young singers will be able to participate!  The kids are working hard, so make the trip to support them!
