Challenge Match: Double It for the Dogs!

This year’s Fund-A-Cause is in place to improve safety around the Special Care Unit (SCU) for dogs, staff, and volunteers. We had many generous supporters donate or pledge during the Gala in April to help underwrite the cost of improving the SCU play yard, entryway and walkway. Now you have the chance to double your donation, thanks to a $25,000 challenge match by Pat Kermes and Family!

Click here to learn more about this project and see photos.

The funds raised will go a long way to help us build needed cement retaining walls and walkways around the SCU as well as making many other improvements. Special thanks to Pat Kermes and family to enable donations to go even further for this important project.

As always, your donation is tax-deductible as allowed by law.

New Bark on the Block

Somi came to DVGRR from a family who could no longer keep him due to their own medical issues. He is a handsome 4-year-old Golden who can be a little standoffish with new people at first, but once he gets to know you, he's super friendly and fun. He is extremely smart, knowing many commands, and figures new things out quickly. He loves food and will do just about anything for a treat. He does have a nervous side and can be barky in stressful situations. He loves people and will jump up to give hugs once he knows you; he may actually be a little too jumpy at times!

Somi has fairly good leash manners and usually does well unless he sees another dog or person he wants to greet, then he may pull. He is a smaller boy only weighing around 50 pounds. He stills needs to be neutered, but once that is done, he will be available for adoption.

Please consider a donation to our Cody Medical Fund to help offset the veterinary needs of dogs in the program. Click here to donate.

Please be sure to visit our Available Dogs page and learn about each of these dogs that's waiting for a new home.

Not every dog that is available for adoption will be featured on our website. Sometimes, we can match dogs to prospective adopters very quickly, so you won't see those dogs on the site. If you are interested in adopting a dog, be sure to visit the Adoption section of our website and complete an Adoption Application to be considered.

Canine Health: Lyme Disease

With summer in full swing, plenty of us our outside and spending time in areas that may have ticks, so be on the lookout for them as various tick species transmit various diseases, including Lyme Borreliosis.

Lyme disease only causes symptoms in five to ten percent of affected dogs, and the dominant symptom is lameness caused by joint inflammation. Affected dogs may also exhibit signs of depression and appetite suppression. More serious complications include kidney damage, and Goldens and Labs are two of the breeds in which this serious complication is more prevalent. Symptoms at the stage of kidney complications include vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and increased thirst and urination.

Once diagnosed, Lyme disease is typically treated with a four-week regimen of doxycycline. Other antibiotics may also be used and longer courses of treatment may also be needed.

To prevent exposure to Lyme and other tick-borne diseases, check your dog's skin and coat for ticks every day and if found, remove them by hand and begin monitoring for symptoms. Also, talk to your veterinarian about recommended topical repellents and whether a Lyme vaccine may be right for your dog.
