To the educators in our communities, On behalf of Northeastern's Marine Science Center , we thank you for your work and your continued support of students during these challenging times. We are pleased to provide STEM resources and distance learning opportunities as you navigate the pivot to remote teaching. Each week, we'll be highlighting some of our online teacher resources to help support at-home learning. Make your own Tidepool Activity

Have your students tap into their creative side with this create a tidepool activity. Complete with fun facts about each organism, students can cut out and color animals to create their very own tidepool ecosystem. Image drawing credit: Tanya Rodgers

Create your own reusable bag!

Challenge your students to create a reusable bag out of an old t-shirt. Step by step instructions , available in both English and Spanish, can guide students through the activity. Connect this activity to ocean conservation issues by sharing information from this plastic pollution factsheet .

Annual Art Contest

Invite your students to take place in the annual Marine Art Contest hosted by Massachusetts Marine Educators and Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary . The theme is “ Illustrating the Marine Biodiversity of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary .” Contest sponsors encourage students to consider composing pieces that show predator-prey relationships or depict species diversity in a habitat setting. Students can send a clear image of artwork to stellwagen@noaa.gov by May 15. Visit the website for more entry information.

MSC Researcher & News Spotlight

Researcher Spotli ght: Andrea Unzueta Martinez Andrea is a Phd Candidate in the Bowen lab at Northeastern University. She received a B.S. from the University of Hawai‛i at Mānoa, investigating coral disease in Kāne‛ohe Bay, Hawai‛. During the summer of 2015, she joined the Bowen Lab as an NSF-REU student and worked on a project that investigated the microbial community associated with lobster shell disease. I am really interested in the role of bacteria in the health and ecology of marine organisms that are targets for conservation efforts . Photo credit: Rachel Kara

Update on Upcoming Marine Science Center Programs

Coastal Ocean Science Academy At this moment, we are still planning on running COSA during the scheduled dates in July and August, and we welcome applications from students interested in these hands-on marine science experiences. We continue to closely monitor updates from the CDC and MA Dept. of Health, and will let registered participants know if there is a change.
