October 2018 at Place des Arts
Home to our arts community
Don't you love this crisp and sunny fall weather? It's my favourite time of year, made even better by seeing Place des Arts bustling with creative people developing skills and getting inspired in our new season of programs.

We have lots to tell you about this month, perhaps nothing more important than our online fundraising auction. This is the third year we have held the auction to raise funds to provide subsidized programs for low-income families in our community - something dear to our hearts!

We have a lovely faculty concert coming up mid-month to commemorate the 100th anniversary of WWI, a children's Halloween concert with Mr. I, three new exhibitions opening on October 12 and, drum roll please, a new website! We're also excited to announce the winners of our My Place des Arts Story Contest.

Read on to find out about all the action around Place des Arts in October. And, as always, feel free to send me feedback or questions about anything you read in the newsletter.

Concert Commemorates WWI Anniversary
This fall marks the 100th year since the end of the WWI. In a poignant concert, pianist and new Place des Arts music teacher Maria Jung, with her accomplished guests Eve-Lyn de la Haye and Lawrence de la Haye, commemorate this meaningful anniversary through voice, clarinet and piano.

Featuring works in three languages, the trio will perform pieces by several significant wartime composers including Britten, McCabe, Debussy, Poulence, Gurney  and Granados. Find out more.

MRI Join Mr. I for His Slightly Spooky Concert
Mr. I's annual Halloween concert has been enchanting wee ones for years, and the long-time Place des Arts music teacher continues the trend with this year's Slightly Spooky Songs and Stories concert on Sunday, October 28 at 2:00 pm.

Have You Checked Out Our New Website?
On Tuesday, September 25, we launched our brand spanking new website! Design firm Carter Hales, who also executed our wonderful new brand and visual identity system, have done a fantastic job with the site.

We couldn't be happier with the vibrant and playful look, the way the design blends seamlessly with our other branding elements and, most importantly, its improved and mobile-friendly functionality. We think our clients will especially appreciate the improved online registration capability.

If you haven't had a chance to browse through the site, please do so. We'd love to hear what you think!

We Have A Story Contest Winner!
Thanks to everyone who entered our My Place des Arts Story Contest; we're thrilled to announce that Donna Forsyth took first prize!

Donna's story of finding love and support at Place des Arts while her family faced serious health issues inspired, humbled and moved us deeply. Donna told us:

If there was a colour to describe [how I feel at Place des Arts], it would be yellow for happiness and pink for love and support. I have roses this colour  . . .  they bud in yellow and as they open up, the pink emerges as it grows.

Congratulations to the other winners as well!
Second prize: Tara Campbell
Third prize: Bella Han
Honorable Mentions: Natalie Quiring and Anita Hubbard

Stay tuned over the 2018/19 season as we share visual vignettes of the three top prize winners as well as some of the other wonderful stories we read. We're convinced you'll be as inspired by them as we have been!
