TAALS and AIIC member Cyril Flerov presents his online lecture about strategies in simultaneous interpretation on May 30, 2020 at 9 am Pacific/12 pm Eastern time (USA and Canada) over Zoom. Q&A to follow. 3.5 hours.

Presenter:
Cyril Flerov is a professionally trained Washington DC, USA based Russian conference interpreter (Russian A, English B) educated both in Russia and in the United States with over 25 years of experience.

He is the Executive Secretary of the American Association of Language Specialists (TAALS) and a member of the AIIC USA Regional Bureau.

His speaking engagements about interpretation include AIIC, TAALS, NASA, California Federation of Interpreters, MIIS, CHICATA (Chicago Area Translators and Interpreters Association), STIBC (Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia), Canada, and others.

He co-authored (with Michael Jacobs) the first book on voice training for interpreters "Improving the Interpreter's Voice." (2016)


EVENT DESCRIPTION

Strategies in SI are a number of learned and well established ways to solve difficulties arising in SI.

The main difference between expert interpreters and students/beginners is that experts have developed schemata to handle a variety of situations in SI. Such schemata have to be taught and internalized until they become almost automatic.

The 3.5-hour lecture introduces main SI strategies and their use for beginners and more experienced interpreters.

It covers - among others- the following topics:

  • types of difficulties in SI,
  • the role of strategies and their goals,
  • generic strategies and more specific techniques (e.g. saucissonnage vs segmentation vs literal translation),
  • difference in the use of strategies in various types of SI (e.g. court vs conference setting),
  • types of probability prediction in SI,
  • strategies and information management, and
  • the role of strategies in the overall process of communication.

The workshop is followed by an exercise in selecting appropriate strategies depending on given initial conditions.
