PORTAL NORTH BRIDGE GROUND BROKEN - BRINGS 15,000 JOBS TO STATE

 

15,000 jobs are coming to New Jersey as work continues on the Portal North Bridge. Scheduled for completion in 2026, it will replace the current Portal Bridge, which was completed in 1910. US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was on hand for a special ground breaking to commemorate the start of work on the history-making project. 

 

Additional updates on the project – and others - are anticipated at the upcoming Hudson County Chapter meeting of the Alliance for Action, slated for October 25.

NJ WIND PORT FOOTPRINT TO EXPAND

 

The NJ Wind Port is already expanding! New Jersey is purchasing an additional

109.4-acre property for the Wind Port in Lower Alloways Creek. This will expand the overall size to 220 acres. The port will provide a location for essential staging, assembly and manufacturing activities for projects all along on the East Coast. It will create up to 1,500 manufacturing, assembly and operations jobs.

GOVERNOR MURPHY ANNOUNCES MULTI-MILLION CAMDEN INVESTMENT


The City of Camden is getting $204 million in municipal aid. Infrastructure opportunities include:


• $35 million to demolish vacant structures through the Camden County Improvement Authority


• $15 million for the Camden County Courthouse Regional Corrections Center


• $10 million for Camden County’s work to rehabilitate Admiral Wilson Boulevard West


• $10 million for Camden County’s Park and Trails Program


• $5 million for the Camden Housing Fund Initiative to construct affordable housing


• $5 million for citywide improvements for pedestrian safety


• $4.085 million for sewer and water infrastructure upgrades


• $3 million for upgrades to Camden City Hall and city facilities

MUNICIPALITIES SHARE $39.45 IN FEDERAL FLOOD PROTECTION AID


Several cities across New Jersey are getting monies from the IIJA and FEMA monies through the State’s Building Resilience Infrastructure and Communities and Flood Mitigation Assistance Programs. It is allocated to the following projects: 


• Atlantic City: $5.1 m for Baltic Ave. Canal


• Bayonne: $6.67 M for stormwater projects


• Cranford: $3.6 M for elevating buildings


• Newark: $10.6 M for the Ironbound Resiliency Center


• Elizabeth: $2 M for elevating critical pumps and fire suppression equipment at the port


• Rutherford: $4.5 M to protect Bergen MUA pump station with a flood wall


• Somerset County $6.8 M for home buyouts

NEW BRUNSWICK PLANNING BOARD MOVES HUB PROJECT FORWARD

 

Work is expected to begin in early 2023 on the first phase of “The Hub”, which will include a 560,000 square foot academic research building in New Brunswick. The facility will also house the new Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The school will be relocating from Piscataway. The building will also have floors devoted to innovation and translational research. 


STATE AWARD $9.4 MILLION FOR WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

 

NJDEP is putting out grants for a number of flood mitigation projects around the state. The full list of grantees and potential opportunities is below:

TTF RAISES SPENDING CAP

 

Ensuring continued opportunities, the Transportation Trust Fund is getting another $600 million. The fund can continue to pump out $2 billion annually for transportation infrastructure upgrades through at least mid-2024.


NJTRANSIT GETS FTA GRANT

 

The Federal Transit Administration is funding a new construction opportunity via a grant to NJTRANSIT to renovate the Union City Bus Garage. The grant is funded by the IIJA and totals $44 million. The garage will accommodate future electric buses.

PEOPLE AND COMPANIES ON THE MOVE


Alliance for Action member Global Infrastructure Inc. is acquiring Hill International. The deal is valued at $173 million.


Retiring PSEG President and CEO Dr. Ralph Izzo is entering the NJ Hall of Fame this fall under its “Enterprise” Wing.


Dr. Harvey Kesselman is retiring as president of Stockton University at the end of the next academic year, on June 30, 2023. He has been president since 2015 and was a member of the school’s first class.


In Atlantic City, Anthony Faranca is the Hard Rock/Atlantic City’s new president, effective September 1. Mark Giannantonio was selected to serve as president of the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ). Giannantonio is the president and CEO of Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. He succeeds Joe Lupo, the current Hard Rock president in Atlantic City.


Former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Barry Albin has joined Lowenstein Sandler as a partner in the Litigation Department. He will chair its Appellate Practice Group.


Orla Pease is the new Global Business Change Director, Engineering Services at Atkins/SNC-Lavalin.


Joseph Fiordaliso is the new President of the National Association of Engineering Council Executives. He is also on the Executive Committee of the American Council of Engineering Companies. Joe is President of the ACEC NJ Chapter.


Johnson & Johnson Executive Vice President and General Counsel Michael Ullmann is retiring from his position December 31. Ullmann will be succeeded in the role by Elizabeth Forminard, She also becomes a member of Johnson & Johnson’s Executive Committee.


Raymond C. Alvarez, PE, PMP has joined Burns & McDonnell after his recent retirement from PSE&G, where he was the Sr. Director of Electric Asset Management.


The Gateway Development Corporation has a new New York Co-Chair. Alicia Glen is the Founder and Managing Principal of MSquared, a women-owned real estate development and investing platform. She is also a former New York City Deputy Mayor.
