Journeying and Wandering
~ Rev. Meredith Garmon

Sometimes you're on a journey. Sometimes you're wandering. There are advantages to each -- and sometimes it's impossible to tell the difference. Whatever it is you're doing, it's good to pay attention.

Mabon: Strength Amid the Isolation
~ Joe Gonzalez, guest speaker

Mabon is a modern Pagan ritual of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth, and a recognition of the need to share them to secure the blessings of the Goddess and the God during the coming winter months. As we slowly emerge from our isolation and begin preparing for the colder weather, we will be taking part in a ritual that will help us explore how to deal with goals unmet this year while still being able to share our core strength with those around us who need it. Joe Gonzalez and wife Tara Fleck are a Wiccan High Priest and Priestess, and former members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Stamford, where they formed the Sacred Circle Pagan Group and led quarterly pagan rituals during Sunday services. They are now Friends of CUUC, and Joe is a proud member of the Religious Education Council. Tara and Joe have taught Wiccan lessons as part of CUUC’s RE program, where their kids Norah (10) and Austin (7) are students. Ethan (17) completed his Coming of Age three years ago.

Click HERE for the Fall 2020 RE overview and schedule. Religious Education and Social Justice leaders are collaborating to offer a rich experience of learning and action. The 2020-2021 theme for RE is JUSTICE & EQUITY to support our young people in understanding key justice issues, finding their voice, and engaging in faith in action. September-December, the K-4th grade class is collaborating with the Hunger & Homelessness team, the 5th-7th grade class is collaborating with UU The Vote, and the 8th-12th grade class is collaborating with In The Spirit of Truth/Racial Justice. Fall classes will meet online. We are also planning social and community building activities for Youth Group. Adult RE classes will meet every Sunday at 1:30. Read the weekly RE newsletter HERE. A Second Look

At our Sun Aug 16 worship, author and CUUC member Amy Nathan shared the story of Sarah Keys Evans, a young Black woman in the Women’s Army Corps who in 1952 refused to move to the back of a bus, was arrested, and began a legal battle that was seminal in the fight for equal rights. You can learn more about Ms. Evans and the monument recently unveiled in her honor HERE and HERE. Find more about Amy's book about Evans, Take a Seat - Make a Stand HERE.
From Hunger & Homelessness

Thanks to everyone who has been contributing to the summer plateshare supporting our Hunger & Homelessness team as we prepare weekly food trays for HOPE soup kitchen. This week we donated 80 lbs of roast chicken, 2 trays each of veggie baked beans and mashed potatoes, 5 trays of steamed veggies (cauliflower, carrots, onions), 2 trays of egg salad (168 eggs worth) plus treat bags! Helpers included Scott D, Carole and Dinsa M, Creighton C, Steve M, Liz L, Sandee M, and Brian D. Our plateshare collection will soon end but the need to help those facing food insecurity continues. You can help by sending checks to CUUC with the memo “Meals for HOPE” or by donating online at cucwp.org (select “Other” and type in “Meals for HOPE”).
