Widening the Circle of Concern
~ Rev. Meredith Garmon

What have we tended to exclude, and how can we move toward being more inclusive?
Sun Aug 2, 10:00am
For All Earth: Ministries of People and Planet
~ Rev. Karen Brammer, Guest Worship Leader

Much has been said about the tragic inequities common to both the pandemic and climate crisis. As a people of faith, we can also look at real possibilities and gifts inherent in both, and make decisions about how we live our values in recognition of tragedy and possibility.

Rev Karen Brammer has been a UU minister since 1998. She has also served as Manager of the Green Sanctuary Program since 2012 and is a member of UU Council of the International Initiative for Transformational Collaboration (INITC), an Indigenous-led process for people of diverse experiences and traditions to come together to learn more about what it means to be human together, and in relationship to Earth.

Note: Rev. Meredith will be on vacation from after Sunday worship until Mon Aug 3

  • Religious Education classes and Youth Group are on break for the summer. Stay tuned for information about an end of August Family Fun Day, conditions permitting.
  • Thursday evening story time has concluded, and may start again with a new book in August.
  • Racial justice resources for families and RE leaders are HERE.

Recently, I was able to participate in the first Virtual UUA General Assembly. The numerous services, talks, and workshops I attended have given me much to ponder in terms of relating the past to current struggles for racial equality, and the challenges involved in situating artistic creation in moral contexts. I hope to share my evolving understanding of these issues through my programming and through my contextualizing at worship services and on our blog in the coming church year.. . Read more HERE .

The 8th Principle

The Board of Trustees has announced a milestone congregational initiative: at the request of the Board, the Racial Justice/In the Spirit of Truth team will lead CUUC in its journey toward a congregational vote in spring 2021 on the adoption of the “ 8th Principle,” which calls us to “...build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” Read more HERE.
UU the Vote

UU the Vote Planning, Mon Jul 27, 7:00pm, Room 7899
UU the Vote is a non-partisan effort to encourage participation in elections. We UUs have a legacy of working to expand democracy and to shape a world in which all people are free and flourishing. Our UU values of interdependence, democracy, and the inherent worth and dignity of all people are direct antidotes to the fear, bigotry, and inequity that define our world . Join us as we plan what members of our congregation can do to be involved and effective. Contact: Jeff Tomlinson ( jefftomlinson8@gmail.com )

TIME 100 Talks “Malcolm Jenkins and Maya Moore Say Widespread Support for the Black Lives Matter Movement Is Just the Beginning”
The TIME 100 Talks: Finding Hope is a special series from Time magazine featuring leaders across different fields encouraging action toward a better world. In the years since Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and WNBA basketball star Maya Moore started fighting for criminal justice reform and an end to racial injustice, public support for Black Lives Matter has grown significantly. But both athletes say that widespread support — evident in recent polling — is just a first step in creating meaningful change. See their interview HERE .
From the Refugee Resettlement Team

Opportu nities W anted. We are helping three of our local refugees find employment. Two are looking for technician positions and the third, who has a college degree, is looking for an entry-level management job. Find brief summaries of their skills and interests HERE. If you or someone you know can help, please contact Robin Rocchi ( robinandal@verizon.net) or Jane Dixon ( lilrhodie@gmail.com).
Saving Split Rock

At the 2020 UUA General Assembly, UUs affirmed an “Action of Immediate Witness” (AIW) where we are called to “address 400 years of white supremacist colonialism” through solidarity with “all Indigenous peoples struggling to preserve their lands, waters, peoples, sacred sites, and sovereignty” (full text HERE ). A local action aligned to this AIW is the fundraiser to preserve Split Rock, a sacred site of the Ramapough Lenape Nation. You can learn more and donate HERE .
