The Great British Paradox: Innovation Without Income!
Mike Fisher, PhD, FRSC,Chief Commercial Officer at Oncimmune, an Alden Scientific Company, BABCNE, VP
The UK holds an enviable position as a world leader in fundamental research and breakthrough invention. From the foundational discoveries of DNA and penicillin to the invention of the World Wide Web, British universities and scientists consistently operate at the cutting edge. Yet, as this report from the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee highlights, this brilliance rarely translates into sustained, large-scale commercial success on the world stage.
As I see it, the Brits generally have 2 problems: we're risk averse and we undersell ourselves. Failure in the US is something to learn from, but is seen as career damaging in the UK. I've also seen numerous UK companies pitch for funding here in the US and thought 'they should have added another zero to that figure and had greater aspirations'.
This report does highlight that the UK is clearly a great place for companies to place early stage discovery, but until the UK can successfully bridge the cultural and financial gap between the lab bench and the boardroom, it will remain a brilliant factory of ideas, exporting genius and importing the resulting products.

New MIT Sloan research suggests that AI is more likely to complement, not replace, human workers
MIT Sloan Office of Communications
March 17, 2025
While much public discourse centers on concerns of advanced technologies substituting for and displacing human workers, new research from the MIT Sloan School of Management presents a different perspective — moving beyond simply identifying jobs at risk from AI and highlighting areas where human expertise will remain important and complementary to technological advancements.
The paper, “The EPOCH of AI: Human-Machine Complementarities at Work” offers a framework of human-intensive capabilities and a set of metrics to evaluate tasks across all occupations and better understand the effects of AI on the labor market.
Authors are Roberto Rigobon, the Society of Sloan Fellows, Professor of Management at MIT Sloan, and postdoctoral associate Isabella Loaiza.
