Early Halifax Rail Road
The railroad from Boston to Plymouth started running one train a day in 1845. When it was surveyed, the original lines went between what today would be the area of Pond and Elm Street and the area of Furnace and Elm Street, but the farmers objected fearing that their cattle would be killed. There is a story that the Fall River Railroad company surveyed a line that went near Baker's Blacksmith shop (when it was on Old Plymouth Street), but the road was never built. And the town was again left out to one side when the Brockton and Plymouth street railway was built, for it just touched the northeast corner of the town.
This left Whitman and Hanson having the honor of tracks running from Boston to Plymouth. The residents of Halifax used the Monponsett Station in Hanson.
The photo is a postcard from 1940 showing the Monponsett Station on Monponsett Street in Hanson. The station was on the South side of the tracks that are there today, near where Cranland Airport is.
Respectfully submitted,
Sue Basile

If you are thinking about trying to do something for the upcoming new year. Please consider volunteering for a position on one of our town boards or committees.
While the Board or Committee you want to volunteer for might be full at this time, openings are always happening with changes in peoples lives.
The town of Halifax needs more residents to have an understanding of how municipal government works. I've been working to try to get the Board of Selectmen meetings live on Zoom for the past few weeks. (Area 58 has been able to provide me a feed of their camera.) We have run into some logistical issues for participation of employees in town hall but it seems to work if you have a connection outside the building.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
As a child, I learned a little about him, and I thought he must have been pretty important that everyone gets a day off. I learned quotes and that he was instrumental in forwarding the Civil Rights movement.
But it wasn't until my masters studies in Interfaith Leadership that I really studied his works and his life.
How he motivated an interfaith coalition to peacefully make change happen in our laws and institutions. How he withstood death threats and direct abuse to stand up for human dignity and racial equality. How he trained others to do the same, leaning on their deep spiritual understanding. And how the movement was grounded in a moral imperative.
The quotes we have and share are supported by actions he took in his lifetime, and was finally killed for. His resistance to our systemic brutality eventually caused his death.
When I read "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." I cannot nicely tuck it into my feel good quote pile. It is a call to action. Our America and our world call all of us to drive out hate. To learn what we need to learn, to read and listen to the stories of people of color.
Martin Luther King, Jr, his actions and his life, have had a profound effect on me, and motivate me daily as he modeled how peaceful resistance and love overcome hatred and injustice.
