Today, Onondaga County (Syracuse area) approved temporarily switching from a percentage-based sales tax on motor fuel to a cents-per-gallon method.

Effective June 1, 2022, the county sales tax rate on motor fuel will become 12 cents a gallon, per a local law adopted today by the county legislature. The temporary rate will expire November 30, 2022, unless extended by lawmakers.

So far, two other counties have approved cents-per-gallon sales tax caps on gas -- Dutchess (8 cpg) and Nassau (14 cpg), both effective June 1st. Other counties we know of that are considering switching to cents-per-gallon are Oneida, Ulster, Suffolk, Erie, Niagara, and Putnam. Some others are expected to follow. We will notify you as action is taken.
