 Season Wrap-Up

If you are not an all-season cyclist, as we approach November your 2014 ride days and the cycling season is soon coming to an end. We hope you have many great memories and top ride experiences, getting out and exploring more of Ontario by bike.

Taking stock of our season, we can't help but look back reflecting on our favourite rides of the year, thinking of all the people we met and projects we completed this year for Ontario By Bike.

In January, we were pleased to announce our new name, rebranding from the Welcome Cyclists Network to Ontario By Bike. Our new name was well received by the cycling community and we continue to grow our cycling information services to new regions and expand the bicycle-friendly business certification program.

Early 2014 also saw the release of our 20-page, full-colour 'Cycling In Ontariopublication, aimed at inspiring cyclists to explore Ontario on two wheels. In 2015, we'll be publishing a new edition with the latest cycling experiences and information to help you explore more of Ontario by bike. Keep your eyes out for this publication and for information on how you can request a copy.

It continued to be a busy year, seeing the Network expand to Ottawa, where Ontario By Bike has now certified 38 locations, plus Wellington West BIA as Ontario's first bicycle-friendly business area! The Network also expanded to Ontario's southwest including; Elgin, Oxford and Middlesex counties. Cyclists can now access great cycling information and over 60 certified bicycle-friendly businesses throughout these areas! Later this month, Ontario By Bike will be launching the Network in the Parry Sound District!

Ontario By Bike also reconnected with the communities throughout the Greenbelt, giving a cyclists a refresh of new cycling information and certifying more businesses as bicycle-friendly in the regions of NiagaraHalton, Peel, York, and Durham, as well as Hamilton and Northumberland County. Well timed, as the Greenbelt Route gets ready to launch in 2015. (See below for more details.)

And did you check out our new Ride Guide series? Recognizing that many cyclists wish to ride and tour independently we developed our first three Ride Guides. Now available for Toronto, Ottawa and Grey County, each provides an optimal self-guided route itinerary with links to further cycling resources, routes, certified bicycle-friendly business locations and suggestions for a fun bike getaway.

Cyclists - Belleville

We can't help but look forward and get excited about what lies ahead. Whether it's the return of some of our favourite cycling events, new routes and maps, Network expansion in existing areas and launching in new ones, or growing our shared collection of great cycling experiences in the province, 2015 is sure to be a great year for cycling in Ontario!

Don't Miss This Weekend:
Bicycle Fall Blowout Sale

This Saturday, October 18th, don't miss the  15th Annual Bicycle Fall Blowout Sale at Exhibition Place in Toronto. The exciting annual fall event of the popular spring Toronto International Bicycle Show, draws cyclists of all ages from across the province with some of the best pricing on 2014 bikes and gear.

Doors open at 10am and close at 5pm, so get there early as there is usually a line-up of cycling enthusiasts waiting to snap up still-new, year-end stock from Ontario's top bicycle retailers at likely the year's lowest prices - everything from mountain bikes, to touring bikes, to accessories and apparel.

   Greenbelt Route - Opening 2015
There is a great new cycling route in Ontario on the horizon for 2015. Opening next summer, the 480km, fully signed Greenbelt Route will steer cyclists through some of the prettiest natural and agricultural landscapes and welcoming communities across the Greenbelt, from Cobourg to Niagara.

Primarily on quiet, well-paved country back roads, with some trail segments along the way, the route will also feature some shorter break-away side loops and itineraries perfect for day trippers. Additionally, there will be a number of north-south connectors and easy transit options to connect to the route from various start points.

Ontario By Bike is proud to be a part of the route development team, with partners at the Waterfront Regeneration Trust, and encourage you to circle August 16 to 21, 2015 on your calendar!

Join in the inaugural end-to-end ride event and celebration, part of a 6-day, fully supported tour and special edition of the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure. Stay tuned for registration information and other details to be posted on our project partner's website.

For more details on the route read a great article by Toronto Star journalist John Barber, who shared some of the highlights from the test ride this past Spring. Read the article here.
