Ontario Issues Stay-at-Home Order Effective April 8

Today the Premier announced that a State of Emergency is being declared for the Province of Ontario. Effective 12:01am Thursday April 8, 2021, the government is issuing a province-wide Stay-at-Home order requiring everyone to remain at home except for essential purposes which includes going to the grocery store or pharmacy, accessing health care services, outdoor exercise, or for work that cannot be done remotely.
With today’s announcement, the additional measures that are being implemented for retail stores include:
  • Non-essential retail stores will only be allowed to operate for curbside pick-up (between 7:00am – 8:00pm) and delivery (between 6:00am – 9:00pm)
  • Restricting the in-person retail sales at discount and big box stores to grocery items, pet care supplies, household cleaning supplies, pharmaceutical items, health care items, and person care items only
  • Access to shopping malls will be restricted to limited, specified purposes including access for curbside pick-up and delivery by appointment
  • Permitting outdoor garden centres and plant nurseries and indoor greenhouses that engage in sales to the public to operate at 25% capacity, with restricted hours of operation of 7:00am to 8:00pm
  • Permitting the following stores to operate for in-person retail sales by appointment only and subject to a 25% capacity limit and restricting allowable hours of operation to 7:00am – 8:00pm (delivery of goods is permitted between 6:00am – 9:00pm):
  • Safety supply stores;
  • Businesses that primarily sell, rent or repair assistive devices, aids or supplies, mobility devices, aids or supplies or medical devices, aids or supplies;
  • Rental and leasing services including automobile, commercial and light industrial machinery and equipment rental;
  • Optical stores that sell prescription eyewear to the public;
  • Businesses that sell motor vehicles, boats and other watercraft;
  • Vehicle and equipment repair and essential maintenance and vehicle and equipment rental services; and
  • Retail stores operated by a telecommunications provider or service, which may only permit members of the public to enter the premises to purchase a cellphone or for repairs or technical support.

Essential retail stores (including grocery stores, pharmacies, supermarkets) will remain open for in-person shopping at 50% capacity.
