My Journey of Faith, Education, and Service- My Journey Onward

My faith and education have been the backbone and the core of my life. In many ways, “Onward” has been the theme of my journey—even before I realized it.

The story begins in the early 1970s when my parents immigrated to the United States in search of the American Dream. Growing up during that time was not easy. I faced many challenges that are a part of my formation, all the while loving school and embracing every opportunity to learn formally and informally. I will always remember my fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Mato, who gave me three “talking tickets” each day and said, “Nancy, choose your comments and questions wisely.” As an educator and looking back, I see her wisdom. She was teaching me to think deeply and contribute meaningfully while allowing space for others.

Fast forward to college, I was still that eager student sitting in the front row, arriving early, and asking my last question at 9:59 p.m. for a class scheduled to end at 10:00 p.m-turning around to my classmates and saying "just this last one". It was during this time that I met my husband-my math tutor and a back-row sitter. Funny how life works out—and how God sends a wink and a smile. Today, as Executive Director of Onward 2 High School (O2HS), I lead efforts to elevate academic excellence through mathematics for students—a mission that feels like coming full circle.

A Career of Service and Leadership

My enthusiasm for learning grew into a lifelong vocation as an educator and leader. Over nearly three decades, I have had the distinct and unique privilege of serving students, families, and educators across all sectors-traditional public, charter, private, and state education systems-always focused on improving outcomes for young people, especially the underserved.

Most recently, I served as California’s Chief Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction, supporting nearly six million students across 10,000 schools. In this role, I led initiatives that created a statewide focus on the greatest levers for student achievement, including literacy and teacher recruitment. I oversaw billions in school funding and managed large-scale grant programs designed to transform education for generations. My responsibilities spanned critical divisions such as Student Support Services, College and Career Transition, Whole Child, Professional Learning, and statewide assessment and instructional resources. I represented the State Superintendent with the Governor’s Office, Legislature, and State Board of Education, ensuring alignment on policies that advance learning and excellence.

Prior to my work at the state level, I served in senior leadership roles within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, including Chief of Staff, Chief Academic Officer, Chief of Leadership Governance, and Assistant Superintendent. There, I drove cross-departmental initiatives to strengthen academic programs, leadership development, and student support services, including oversight of the Onward 4 Excellence and Onward Leaders teams.

Earlier in my career, as Principal and CEO of St. Mary’s Academy, I expanded academic pathways, introduced dual enrollment programs, and launched new student services while addressing critical infrastructure needs. I also had the honor of serving as Board Chair at St. Pius X–St. Matthias Academy (PMA) following Mr. Smet, where we worked collaboratively with the school community to continue PMA’s growth. Additionally, I served in Los Angeles Unified School District and Green Dot Public Schools in various roles, including teacher assistant, master teacher, Problem-Solving Data Coordinator, and administrator. I am proud to have been part of the team that created a STEM magnet middle school that continues to educate students today.

For us, "Onward” is more than a word. It’s a challenge: to be your best, to dream big, to attempt what feels difficult—and to do it with courage and hope.

Onward 2 High School Today

With profound joy and a grateful heart, I continue the mission of service and the education and formation of young people-to have access to opportunities for themselves and their families, and to contribute to the betterment and strengthening of their communities.

The Onward 2 High School program was created to prepare middle school students for success in high school in two key ways: elevating math achievement and building confidence through engagement with high schools.

Academically, we provide a dedicated director who teaches Honors Algebra I across twelve 8th-grade classes at our partner schools. In addition, directors work across elementary and high school sites to deliver personalized tutoring based on student needs, push into math classrooms for additional support, meet with students for targeted interventions, lead faculty professional development, and analyze student data—such as Star assessments—to drive achievement.

To help students feel comfortable and confident as they transition to high school, we host events that bring students from all 12 partner schools together to build friendships and community. Directors also participate in high school open houses so students see familiar faces, assist with scheduling shadow days, write thoughtful recommendation letters, and meet with families to discuss high school options.

During the summer, the team hosts the premier Onward 2 High School Summer Institute. We are excited to launch the program across our six partner high schools. Beginning July 6, 2026, this three-week STEAM experience will welcome rising 7th and 8th graders from public, charter, and Catholic schools. Students will engage in dynamic, project-based learning, hands-on activities, field trips, and sessions with guest speakers—all while forming friendships that will last into high school and beyond.

We are excited for you to meet the team that is changing lives every day in this edition and in our upcoming 2026 edition.

Thank you for being a part of this important work of educating young people today and tomorrow. Onward!

Director Spotlight

Yvette Serrano

"Onward 2 High School is enriching advanced math preparedness in our partner schools, elevating student achievement and enthusiasm for the subject. As a result, Salesian's math coursework and culture continues to expand to best meet the needs of current and future students."

-Alex Chacon

Bishop Mora Salesian High School President

I have worked in Catholic education for 18 years, specializing in math for grades 4–8. My journey began by piloting a bilingual, biliterate math curriculum in public schools, sparking a passion for helping students develop a growth mindset and overcome math stigma. Working for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has been deeply rewarding, strengthening my commitment to service, education, and faith.

My transition to Catholic education was no accident-it was providential. An old friend who had become a principal needed a long-term substitute, and from that moment, my path changed. What began as a temporary role became a lifelong mission and I have been serving in Catholic schools ever since.

Before joining Onward 2 High School (O2HS), I spent eight years at a Vincentian and Daughters of Charity school, where teaching became a true calling rooted in faith and mission. Today, as an O2HS Program Director, I am excited to collaborate with Bishop Mora Salesian High School, School of Santa Isabel, and Resurrection School to empower students to thrive academically and spiritually. I also advocate for equity in education and work to create meaningful, memorable experiences that inspire confidence, curiosity, and lifelong learning.

How are you elevating math achievement at your partner schools?

My partner principals have made this transition seamless, each bringing unique strengths to their communities. With the support of the Smet Foundation, O2HS team, and our Executive Director, I work to create meaningful experiences where students build community and networks that support a bright future. I collaborate with teachers to align curriculum and provide targeted interventions for students at varying levels. Through diagnostic assessments, personalized pacing guides, and enrichment opportunities, we prepare students for Algebra 1 and beyond. Students track milestones and celebrate success through goal setting and educators use professional development along with a growth mindset to ensuring engaging, rigorous math experiences that accelerate achievement.

"At our community event I learned how to connect with different people and not to be afraid to communicate with other people"

-Mrs. Serrano's Algebra One Honors Student

Describe your O2HS community event:

My fall event at Bishop Mora Salesian was a joyful celebration of learning and community. Families, students, and educators gathered to welcome the inaugural cohort with music and opportunities to connect with faculty and peers. Students showcased Unit 1 skills on one-variable statistics through interactive activities, creating a festive and inspiring atmosphere. The dedication of faculty, staff, Salesian partners, and Onward Scholars volunteers truly reflected the vision of O2HS. Witnessing the Salesian brothers’ commitment was an incredible experience. I am honored to be part of this team and look forward to the success of the Summer Institute.

What inspires you?

Seeing students gain confidence in math and realize their potential inspires me every day.

Fun fact about you?

I love music and often include cultural elements in events to make learning joyful.

How do you make math engaging and accessible for middle school students?

I use real-world application, collaborative problem-solving, and technology tools that make abstract concepts tangible.

What’s your math superpower?

My superpower is connecting math to students’ interests—making it relevant and exciting.

What’s your go-to strategy when a student says, “I am not a math person”?

I remind them that math is a skill, not an identity, and show them small wins to build confidence.

What advice would you give your students about learning?

Embrace mistakes they’re proof you’re learning. Persistence is the key to growth.

Director Spotlight

Yanessa Yanez

I am Vanessa Yanez and I am the Director of Onward 2 High School for St. Odilia School, St. Helen School, and St. Pius X – St. Matthias Academy. I have worked in education for over 20 years and taught middle school and high school math for 12 years. I am passionate about helping students understand that the real challenge in math often lies not in the content itself, but in understanding the problem-solving process.

I believe that a positive classroom culture with a focus on self-efficacy is essential for building students’ confidence and driving their academic success. When students trust their ability to learn and grow, their approach to learning new things is lighter. My goal is to guide students in developing a growth mindset and strategies needed to approach math with confidence and curiosity. I encourage students to be perplexed and struggle in the classroom because it means their brain is growing and building new connections.

Even as a seasoned teacher, I know I still have so much more to learn. I take pride in continuing to educate myself through research, professional development, and collaborating with colleagues. Working across my 3 sites has shown me the richness and diversity of each school community. I will continue to learn, grow, and adapt to meet the needs of current and future students.

"Parents appreciate the guidance and opportunities Onward 2 High School provides, students feel more confident about high school readiness, and faculty commend its positive impact on academic motivation and family engagement."

-Sima Saravia-Perez

St. Odilia School Principal

How are you elevating math achievement at your partner schools?

I work with the junior high math teams at each of my elementary partner sites to provide 1-1 support in targeting students performing below grade level. At my high school site, I am working closely with the leadership team and the math department to facilitate Star data analysis, assist in identifying trends, and facilitate conversations surrounding the implementation of targeted interventions. I also support each site at various school and community events.

"I learned how to socialize with new people around me which will most definitely help me in high school!"

-Mrs. Yanez's Algebra One Honors Student

Describe your O2HS community event:

I invited my students and families from St. Odilia and St. Helen a to a Fall Event on the PMA campus. I called it “Solve, Supper, and Show!” It was a beautiful afternoon of community, lunch and a show where they met students and families from their partner O2HS Honors Algebra 1 class. Together, they engaged in collecting math data to learn more about one another and watched the PMA student theater production of Animal Farm. Parents were able to have one-on-one time with PMA President, Dr. DeLarkin and Principal Rodarte to learn more about PMA and its offerings as a possible future home for their child. They also met the O2HS Executive Director, Nancy Portillo, whom they interviewed on both the program and to gather data for their statistical collaboration project.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by the resilience and curiosity of students. Watching them grow, ask questions, and support one another reminds me why this work matters.

What’s your math superpower?

My math superpower is using energy and enthusiasm to make learning fun and engaging. I connect with students through animated teaching and culturally relevant content, helping them see math as both meaningful and accessible.

What advice would you give middle school students about learning?

M.A.T.H stand for Mistakes Allow Thinking THappen. Mistakes are part of the process. Keep showing up, keep asking questions, and trust that growth is happening—even when it’s hard to see. The Lord reminds us that our effort matters more than perfection, and that HE is with us in every challenge.

Director Spotlight

Edna Ramirez

"Her passion and love for math are being sprinkled into our students. It is evident how much our students love math and Ms. Ramirez. She is a rockstar!"

-Erika Avila-Auzenne

St. Vincent School Principal

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, in the vibrant neighborhood of El Sereno, where I learned to appreciate and celebrate the diverse cultures that bring communities to life. As a first-generation Mexican American, education was always a priority for me, knowing it could open doors to countless opportunities.

I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and completed a program through LMU’s Center for Math and Science Teaching, becoming a certified Teacher Leader in Mathematics. For the past 20 years, I have been blessed to serve Nativity Catholic School in Los Angeles and St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower.

My travels around the world have deepened my appreciation for culture and strengthened my belief in the value of education from a global perspective. I am fascinated by how mathematics has shaped early civilizations and propelled human progress. Above all, my son inspires and motivates me every day to empower youth, especially those in underserved communities, to reach their fullest potential.

How are you elevating math achievement at your partner schools?

Leveraging eight years of experience teaching at St. John Bosco High School, I have introduced a high school-level atmosphere into our middle school classrooms across the two partner sites. The rigor and pacing mirror an honors setting, providing students with their first exposure to advanced coursework where grades are based on mastery of standards. Students engage in regular error analysis to identify areas for improvement, reflect on their learning, and create actionable plans for growth. Additionally, they analyze test scores, monitor progress, and set personal goals during structured meetings, empowering them to become advocates for their own success. This approach not only elevates expectations but accelerates achievement by fostering accountability, critical thinking, and a college-prep mindset.

"I learned to persevere through hardships, accept defeat, congratulate the winning team, and better improve my mindset under pressure."

-Ms. Ramirez's Algebra One Honors Student

Describe your O2HS community event:

The Autumn Math Bowl was an incredible celebration of learning, community, and school spirit. We welcomed 25 middle school students, along with their families, principals, teachers, and fellow directors—bringing together more than 70 attendees. The atmosphere was electric, filled with excitement and a touch of nervous energy as students from both participating schools met, mingled, and formed new friendships. Throughout the competition, students showcased not only their math knowledge but also collaboration, sportsmanship, and critical thinking skills. Parents were thrilled to see their children compete and shine in such a dynamic setting. The event truly united the three schools, creating the feeling of one cohesive program. Mr. Lopez, Cathedral School Principal, added a warm, welcoming touch by bringing the Cathedral mascot and his cafeteria team, while inspiring words from Mr. Lopez and Mr. Bramble, Onward Scholar Director, elevated the experience. Families expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, and the celebration continued beyond the event—winning students proudly wore their ribbons the following Monday, and the school recognized them during morning assemblies. Receiving flowers and balloons from administration was a heartfelt reminder of the impact this event had on our community.

Fun fact about you?

I have a passion for travel and cultural exploration. I’ve visited five countries and experienced two of the world’s wonders—Chichen Itza and Machu Picchu—gaining unforgettable insights and inspiration along the way.

How do you make math engaging and accessible for middle school students?

I make math engaging and accessible for middle school students by starting with what the Salesians call animation—bringing excitement and joy into every activity. I’m a big kid at heart, so I strive to lift lessons off the page and create experiences that involve movement, collaboration, and creativity.

What’s your math superpower?

People often assume math teachers are human calculators, but mental math is definitely not my thing! My true superpower lies in unpacking and breaking down complex concepts so students can reach a deep understanding. I love painting a clear picture—making abstract ideas concrete and accessible. That ability to simplify and visualize math is what sets me apart.

How has your background or upbringing shaped your approach to education?

I come from a background that values hard work, resilience, and community, and those principles shape my approach to education every day. Growing up, I learned that education is a powerful tool for opportunity, so I strive to create classrooms where every student feels capable and supported. My upbringing taught me the importance of meeting students where they are, celebrating their progress, and pushing them to reach their full potential.

How do you celebrate student success, big or small?

I make sure to focus on growth when celebrating student success, and I even celebrate errors because they lead to exploration and new strategies. I believe mistakes are powerful learning tools, so I encourage students to take chances and persevere through challenges. Recognizing effort and resilience—not just correct answers—helps build confidence and fosters a classroom culture where every step forward matters.
