Banned Books Week 2024
Thank you to everyone who stopped by our Banned Book Table to learn more about the rise of book challenges across the county. We engaged in some very meaningful conversations. Finding out the titles of banned books using only the reasons given for banning them in our Blind Date with a Banned Book display, can be pretty surprising. Celebrate your fREADom to Read!

Would You Like to Improve Your Coordination, Flexibility or Balance?
Well Minded Movement can help you improve coordination, flexibility and balance! The next session takes place tomorrow, Friday, September 27, 11:30 am- 12:30 pm. In this gentle movement class, you will experience a unique way of movement that is accessible for everyone, and helps you to move in a way the creates more ease and less tension on your muscles, as well as joints and tendons.
Instructor: Patricia Wahl, Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner. Drop in. Space is limited. First come, first served. NOTE: There is no class on Friday, 10/4. Class will resume on Friday, 10/11.

Sing Your Heart Out: Singing Workshop for Adults
There's still time to join Sing Your Heart Out. Join us on Saturday, September 28, 9:30 - 11:30 am, for the next rehearsal with music maestro Robert Puleo. Robert will help participants attain the confidence required to sing, along with teaching aspiring singers how to select music appropriate for their voice, and--most importantly--how to have fun throughout the entire 'learning to sing' process! Sessions will take place in the Ossie Davis Theater.

English Learner Conversation Circle Is Back Beginning this Saturday

Our Civics Class for Citizenship continues this Saturday, September 28, 2:00 pm. This class will help prepare students for the U.S. citizenship or naturalization exam and interview. Saturday Afternoon Concert Series Kickoff: Jhoely Garay/Mexican Jazz
Join us on Saturday, October 5, 2:00 pm as we continue celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a Mexican jazz concert by Jhoely Garay and Friends, presented in partnership with Young Musicians of Westchester. Jhoely is a New York-based guitarist, composer, arranger and educator from Mexico City, Mexico, whose music expresses her passion for straight-ahead swing, contemporary jazz, and music and rhythms from Latin America.

New Rochelle Plays Hollywood Film Club: Boomerang
Join us this Sunday, October 6, 2:00 pm for the next film in our popular New Rochelle Plays Hollywood Film Series, when we will screen Boomerang. This documentary-style film is based on a true event that occurred in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but was shot on location in Stamford. The plot centers on a district attorney who jeopardizes his career by defending a stranger accused of murdering a popular town resident.
Starring Dana Andrews, Lee J. Cobb, Jane Wyatt, Arthur Kennedy; directed by Elia Kazan (88 minutes )
Prior to the screening, film aficionado Les Srager will introduce the history of the film and its creative personnel with a discussion period following the screening. The Fall 2024 series features "Excellent But Little Known Films."

As part of our Hispanic Heritage month celebrations, we will look at three Spanish artists, the twin giants of 16th and 17th Spanish painting, El Greco and Diego Velázquez, and the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Francisco de Goya.

Our new Full STEAM Ahead after-school program for children ages 5-12 is in full swing. In our next session on Thursday, October 3, 4:30 - 5:30 pm, it's time for STEAM Engine Fully Loaded. Children will get on track with STEAM activities that are sure to educate and entertain. Drop in.

New Rochelle Art Association Exhibit
The New Rochelle Art Association's 109th juried show is on display in the Lumen Winter Gallery through October 26. The show consists of artwork in 9 categories: Acrylic/Oils, Graphics, Fine Crafts, Sculpture, Photography, Watercolor, Mixed Media, Digital Art and Pastels.
The New Rochelle Art Association has a long tradition of promoting and supporting artists and the visual arts. Since its informal inception in 1912, the Association has included among its membership many talented and internationally known painters, illustrators and sculptors.

In Case You Missed It (ICYMI)
Earlier this week, John Zeiger, Manager of the Thain Family Forest at the New York Botanical Gardens, gave an insightful and informative virtual presentation on The Importance of Native Trees. Watch it here. The program was presented in collaboration with Healthy Yards of New Rochelle who has been a wonderful partner in enabling the Library to bring excellent programs about native plants and gardening to the community. The presentation also included brief remarks about the City of New Rochelle's Tree Inventory and Community Forest Management Program.

Lawton Street Garage
The Lawton Street Garage was repurposed into a building we easily recognize today – the New Rochelle Public Library. The Library won the Award of Excellence for Library Architecture for its innovative design as a model of adaptive reuse from an existing parking garage.
The Archive of the New Rochelle Public Library is a unique resource of documents relating to the history of New Rochelle. Our Archive is a repository of historical resources such as institutional and civic records, personal papers, and audiovisual materials. In 2023, the entire Photography Collection of the Archive was properly organized and described by our staff Archivist. This collection of over 15,000 photographic images portrays the city in penetrating detail from early public photography of the 1860s to modern digital photos. The “Archive Corner” will be a monthly feature to showcase our Photography Collection to provide a rare
glimpse into the past.

Miranda, Jr. This event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Manhattanville University campus in Purchase, NY.

A Halloween Adventure Awaits at The Haunt at Wildcliff Mansion
Get ready for a Halloween adventure at Wildcliff Mansion for 10 days in October. Experience Dr. Wildcliff’s haunted estate: explore his eerie laboratory, the restless cathedral and graveyard, and a haunted corn maze. Encounter ghostly figures and nightmarish creatures as you navigate the mansion's labyrinthine halls. All proceeds benefit the Hudson Park Children's Greenhouse.
Details: The haunt is recommended for adults, teens, and children who enjoy haunted houses (under 12 must be accompanied by an adult). No babies or strollers allowed. Timed tickets: $25 per person.

Go on a Story Trail at Ward Acres
The Ward Acres Conservancy has installed a temporary Children’s Story Trail, in Ward Acres Park, utilizing the beautifully illustrated children’s book, “A Good Place” by Lucy Cousins.
This story trail provides parents or caregivers, with pre-school and kindergarten age children, with a perfect opportunity to combine a nature walk with a colorful and heartwarming story that is sure to make everyone smile.
Where to find the Story Trail: Enter Ward Acres from Broadfield Road by the main entrance, south of the Dog Park and find the Community Garden to the right of the main trail. Walk along the outside of the Community Garden towards Quaker Ridge and you will find the beginning of the Story Trail a little past the end of the Garden.
Hours: The Story Trail is available all the hours during which the park is open: dawn to dusk.
